Good book esp. for providers new to OB & seeking a more holistic approach

As a Board Certified FNP provider at a free pregnancy clinic providing care to uninsured and underserved women, as well as a Board Certified Advanced Holistic Nurse, I'm always interested in perspectives and approaches that offer a more woman-centered, holistic style of care. This book appealed to me because of the proclaimed woman-centered approach.

I recently received this book, as well as Supporting a Physiologic Approach to Pregnancy and Birth: A Practical Guide by Avery and both books are good. Both discuss the importance, with supporting evidence, of returning to a more natural, "normalizing" approach to birth vs. "management" of the pregnancy and birth process. However, this text goes into much more detail regarding basic concepts and care in OB, and thus would be the better choice for someone new to the field or who is looking for a more comprehensive review. I must say though that both this book and the Avery book present only basic holistic concepts that are most appropriate for providers with minimal to no experience with holistic and integrative care. But as we know, the majority of birthing providers in the USA practice with the mainstream medical model (lay and nurse midwives excepted), so that makes both texts appropriate for the majority of providers.

The Avery book I mention above is a great choice for experience OB providers who don't need the general OB review as it focuses primarily on the rationale, woman-focused methods to incorporate and how to integrate them to create a more holistic, woman centered practice. For example, this book discusses how to address common conditions in pregnancy such as a UTI, Constipation, URI, Depression, etc. with the current standard of care in addition to any practices that can also make the care more holistic. The Avery text assumes this level of knowledge is already in place and thus only discusses the holistic interventions that could be added to make the practice more holistic (as well as mainstream medical practices & interventions that could be decreased to support a more holistic focus of care).

I don't want to give the impression that this book has no benefit for experienced providers, because it does. I have both and I like both books. This one includes post-natal information that the other does not, it has relevant case studies in each section, and overall has a great review of OB care in general. It also addresses the Healthy People goals and how integrating a more holistic approach can help an OB practice better align with or meet those goals. This book would also be great for teaching, as an in-clinic reference book for providers, and again is perfect for students and new grads. (and for those who just prefer a more comprehensive text in general).

If you're OB experienced and want something more succinct, go for the other book. If you prefer a more comprehensive reference pick this one.

The text is divided into the five sections, each offering comprehensive information on current standard practices as well as integrating a more holistic, woman-centered approach. There are many illustrations, charts, case studies and extensive supporting references at the end of each chapter, as well as resources for further information. The Most Comprehensive Book on Women's Health!

"A Woman-Centered Approach is a comprehensive resource for the care of the pregnant woman before and after birth." This book has it ALL. I am currently certifying to become a doula. This books answers all of my questions. Is this book a textbook? It doesnt come across as one but this book is chock full of information on women's health that is easy to read, helpful and holistic. With case studies and diagrams definitions and tips, 'Prenatal & Postnatal Care is THE book to have if you are a woman or working with women: nurses, aides, doulas, midwives, health educators and so much more. Prenatal & Postnatal Care is a STEP UP from "Our Bodies Ourselves" I love this book and I highly recommend it!

Very comprehensive, looks like it covers everything!

This in-depth book seems to cover about everything about the subject. Anybody thinking about having babies, working on it, or newly gratified by this experience should really indulge this like your favorite dessert. I can imagine a new mother sitting in her hospital bed reading this with mind-expanding pleasure, and seriousness. Hubbie should be reading, or at least browsing thru, this or another copy! Admittedly, my background in the subject is not great, but I felt almost like an expert on the whole matter after reading it slowly. Not to mention my general knowledge of the human family may have actually skyrocketed by the time I finished. Easy 5 stars!

Good strategies with easy to implement processes to show you how to do what he teaches.

Josh does a great job of laying out a strategy for attracting clients rather than chasing them. He makes it easy to understand and easy to follow. By laying out the steps in a simple stages he creates a powerful sequence that walks users step by step through the process, showing and explaining the how and why's of what he's doing. Not only does he show people what to do, he also tells you what not to do if you are wanting to attract clients, instead of chasing them. I'd recommend Attract to any real estate agent that is looking for ways to work with their ideal clients and stop chasing every lead all over the internet and beyond. If you want to take your business up a notch or two and simplify your life read this book and implement the ideas starting the minute you finish it.

The strategies in this book make a ton of sense for selling real estate in the world we live in today. This is a book I wish I would've had when I was beginning in the industry! It isn't about "selling" and tricking people into calling you... it's about building real relationships with people, in new ways through new technologies/platforms, in a way that earns people's trust and eventually their business. Great stuff!!

Robin de Jongh worked for many years as a Design Engineer and 3D modeler, and was an early advocate of SketchUp. He has a degree in Computer Aided Product Design from Nottingham Trent University, and is the author of SketchUp for Architectural Visualization: Beginner's Guide. Insightful guide on game design and possibilities with Sketchup

Packt Publishing has offered this an interesting book to me for review. It's about using Sketchup for game design. I like using Sketchup but I didn't know that it is good enough to be used for game design. This book shows that it can, and how you can do it.

This is a beginner's guide that's made up of step-by-step tutorials that build on one another. The goal is to construct a small town on uneven terrain at the outskirts of a city. It's the setting for a first person shooter game, and it's going to be used as demo where you can walk around the town.

To get up to speed, you need basic Sketchup knowledge like modeling and moving things around. The tutorials only cover the essential steps which focuses on finding textures, creating them, and mapping them onto the models.

Specifically for game design, it covers how textures are to be manipulated to get them looking good and still not be a drain on computing resources. The guided exercises are all easy to follow along.

In addition to Sketchup, the book introduces many free software that are to be downloaded and used for the tutorials. They are Meshlab, GIMP and Unity 3D. Unity 3D is a huge file so you'll want to download it first while reading the first few chapters.

The tutorials use GIMP, the Photoshop alternative, to edit pictures. You can still use Photoshop but you'll have to be proficient enough to understand how you can workaround, for example on how you can create seamless textures, because all the steps are written for GIMP.

There are many things new to me in this book. One of them is on creating undulating terrain inside Sketchup. I didn't know that was possible, and it's not difficult. There's also a chapter on modeling a car. The result is semi-realistic because the lesson involves building the general shape and mapping the car texture.

There are a lot of useful tips and tricks in this book. I learned a lot especially on texturing. It's a great book on prototype game design with Sketchup. Fun to read and easy to follow.

Great Intro to Integrating SketchUp Models into Gaming Apps

I'm a SketchUp author myself, and it's always fun to see what others are writing about.

This book actually targets two industries: game design and film / stage. Both use storyboarding to lay out scenarios, and Robin de Jongh explains how to do this in SketchUp, helped by other applications. I'm not an expert (to put it generously) in either field, so the fact that this is a self-stated "Beginner's Guide" is great for me.

To be clear, this isn't a book that teaches SketchUp modeling, though there's nothing presented that requires advanced SketchUp skills. But you'll be ill-served if you pick up this book with no SketchUp experience at all. This book is really about integration - combining SketchUp skills with skills in other applications.

Like Robin's previous book on rendering, this one is quite fun to read. Robin is very funny, and while this one isn't as laugh-out-loud as his first one (maybe his editors wanted this one to be more serious), the intro to each chapter is something to look forward to. And his casual, informal, writing style makes this book a lot more fun than your typical, dry "how-to" book.

And like in his first book, Robin's passion for free stuff comes through loud and clear. He uses free software for graphic editing (GIMP), and finds places to download free models and textures (CGTextures). He demonstrates using Unity 3D for setting up the environment after importing SketchUp assets (terrain and buildings and props). He also focuses on doing things as easily as possible - such as making model changes in SketchUp, rather than in more complex app's like Unity.

There's a lot in here about textures and materials. Not just how to use them in SketchUp, but the most efficient way to use them. Game design is all about speed, and Robin goes into detail about how to reduce the size and number of graphics to keep things running well. This is an important concept for any modeler, but particularly for the target audience of this book.

He devotes a chapter to terrain modeling, which makes sense - game environments (like the real world) aren't always flat planes. By combining plan view graphics and textures with the Sandbox, Stamp, and Drape tools you can build game-worthy spaces.

The second-to-last chapter is my favorite - I've been meaning to write something like this myself for a while - how to design a realistic-looking car in SketchUp. It's a fun project that requires some patience, done with a set of easily-downloadable car plans and some car photos. The resulting model is quite rewarding.

By the end of the book, you're walking around in your own game environment, complete with assets (buildings, cars, tools) and backgrounds and lights.

The appendix demonstrates an app I hadn't heard of - MakeHuman, used for, well, making humans. This is another tough task to accomplish in SketchUp alone, and every game (or stage or movie set) needs a bunch of those pesky humans in it.

My one complaint (if that's the right word) about Robin's first book was that its black and white graphics didn't always convey very well. This new book is also printed in grayscale (I didn't see the e-book but I assume it's in color). But the pictures look much better in this new book - even in grayscale everything is crisp and easy to identify.

If you're thinking of trying your hand designing games or film sets, this book is a great place to start. I know a lot of teenagers who would go nuts trying out the book's projects. I imagine that someone who becomes really proficient in the applications shown in Robin's book would be well on their way to a cool career.

Alexandre "Gigi" Paiva is a legendary figure in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu. He has been World Champion, Pan American Champion, World Bronze Medalist, and five-time Champion of Campeonato Internacional de Masters e Seniors de Jiu-Jitsu. He is also one of the founders of Alliance Jiu-Jitsu—the only team to win every major BJJ competition in a single year—and heads their academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Paiva's students include two-time World Champion Fernando "Terere" Augusto da Silva and Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa, two-time winner of the All-Japan BJJ Open.

Great BJJ instructional.

Alexandre Paiva is a true example of the BJJ lifestyle and is also a great instructor with a storied past in competition. This book is layed out in a great format, easy to follow and absorb each move. Great for beginners and some great variations on moves that are great for long time BJJ practioners. I recommend this book to anyone looking for another great BJJ instructional.

Hands down one of the best books on techniques.

I own several book on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques and this is the best. Whoever trains in Jiu-Jitsu knows that there are thousands of techniques and hundreds of variation for each one and tons of new ones that are created daily. So the only way you can really rate a book on techniques is by the lay out. This book has a ton of color pictures with easy to understand arrows to walk you through the move. And through out each techniques he points out simple mistakes or variations that can get you into trouble. I highly recommend this for anyone who trains. Remember practicing moves from a book can only help an already solid game. This means you need to be part of a gym/school/dojo to build/maintain and grow your game.

I am new to this martial art and as a woman who is in her early 40's I needed this book to give me clear descriptions of the moves I would do each day in my fundamentals class. I actually learned more from the book than from my instructors at class. It is very detailed and gives you step by step instructions for each maneuver.
