Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953)
By Dennis J. Ottley

Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953) is the author’s memoir. This book describes his involvement in Korea during the Korean War and points out the reasoning behind the conflict.

Over the years, the Korean War has been considered “The Forgotten War” by many. At one time, President Harry S. Truman referred to it as a “Police Action,” but 5,720,000 Americans who served in Korean have never forgotten what it was about and that it was much more than just a “Police Action.” They understand that it was an all-out war, and one of the bloodiest in American history. It involved over 20 countries of the United Nations that joined with the United States to save the South Koreans from annihilation and the tyranny of the communist countries, such as Russia and North Korea.

On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed and today South Korea remains as a free nation and one of the strongest and wealthiest countries in Asia. This book is to help Americans understand what the war was all about and describe one soldier’s experience and opinion of the conflict.

About the Author

Dennis J Ottley was born on January 28, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He lived in many different towns throughout his childhood, but his family finally settled in Evanston, Wyoming. He quit high school at the start of his senior year and joined the 141st Tank Battalion of the Wyoming National Guard. About the same time he met a girl who he became very serious about and married on July 26, 1950.

When the Korean War started, Dennis’ guard unit was activated in September of 1950. In July 1951 Dennis was selected for overseas duty and was sent to Korea to help form a new tank company. After serving almost ten months in Korea as a tank gunner and tank commander, he was discharged on May 29, 1952.

Upon arriving home in Evanston, he immediately went back to work to make a new life for himself and his family. After a few years he became highly involved in his community and ended up serving three 4-year terms as a member of the Evanston City Council and three 4-year terms as Mayor.

Dennis was in business for himself most of his adult life and retired from his real estate agency at the end of 2013 at the age of 81. After raising four sons and 64 years of marriage, he and his wife Sandy still live in Evanston.

An Intelligent & Friendly Guide to the World’s Most Powerful Text Editor
    By Ira Laefsky
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why are smart, selective individuals choosing to use Emacs, a text editor that was introduced 40 years ago at MIT?

Perhaps because Emacs is a powerful tool, somewhat difficult to learn, but fast and infinitely extensible. Emacs has undergone continuous improvement even to the present day and is fast, flexible, and usable as a: code editor, programming environment, or document processor. It offers tools for organizing thoughts, debugging programs, typesetting text, playing games, and interacting with the operating system.

Who uses Emacs? -- as Mr. Hahn states: "

    1. You are smart.
    2. You like to use computers.
    3. You enjoy teaching yourself how to use complicated, powerful tools.
    4. You are able to learn on your own by reading and practicing. "

For you a smart person who enjoys using powerful tools on your computer, someone who can follow an entertaining and well-thought-out written companion Mr. Hahn offers the perfect tool for learning how to use the world's most powerful and flexible text editor and programming environment.

Many text editor guides provide as little as a page of introduction before proceeding hopefully, in an orderly manner, through keystroke commands. Harley Hahn's Emacs Field Guide provides a 56-page entertaining, yet pedagogically sound, context for understanding and using Emacs. He describes its history, it's place as a text editor, the Emacs working environment, its place in the context of other programming tools, and its primary operating environment Unix/Linux (although he also covers Microsoft Windows, OS/X, Unix/BSD, and other operating systems).

Mr. Hahn then gives fully explicated instructions for installing Emacs under Microsoft Windows, OS/X and various flavors of Unix/Linux/BSD.

He then, in a clear and pedagogically sound organization, provides detailed instructions for using each type of command and sub-environment: text movement, search, modes, command processing; as well as interacting with the operating system, help, and documentation.

In Appendix A, he provides personal, historical and humorous comments on Emacs, Unix, and the computer history that grew with them.

Appendix B provides detailed and well-organized command summaries of this powerful yet challenging (hard to learn/easy to use) Emacs work environment.

I highly recommend "Harley Hahn's Emacs Field Guide" to beginning and intermediate users of Emacs, who will find it indispensable. Even long-term users of Emacs such as myself will learn and enjoy a great deal from this interesting text.

A fantastic book on a topic that has few of them
    By A. Lamarra
There really aren't a whole lot of books written on Emacs. Fortunately, this is a GREAT introduction! You COULD just use the Emacs built-in tutorial, but this book helps explain how Emacs actually works and gives examples for almost every command. It also takes you through the commands in a logical way grouping similar commands together. And the author does a great job of making it as easy as possible to use this as a reference book, even if you're reading the print version. Obviously, there's a table of contents & index, but there's also an appendix for all the commands that were covered as well as an index for the key sequences & variables/functions.

I was hesitant to read a book when I decided to learn Emacs fearing how dry the material would probably be. However, Mr. Hahn has done a fantastic job of preventing this. He kept my attention and kept the book as brief as possible while still giving enough information.

If I had to complain about something, I'd probably get rid of Chapter 2: Unix for Emacs Users. In there, Mr. Hahn talks about the history of Unix/Linux & a brief introduction to using them. I just feel like somebody that needs such a basic intro to these operating systems is either far from ready to start using Emacs or won't need it at all because they're using it on Windows. Not to mention there are already a multitude of other books/online resources for getting to know Unix/Linux (including a book the author, himself, wrote). Leaving this chapter out would focus the book more on the reason I bought it & slim it down even further. However, this isn't a big deal as I just skipped that chapter.

All-in-all, I'd love to see a follow-up book from this author focusing on advanced Emacs topics. This book does briefly talk about how to customize Emacs, but leaves most of the figuring out to the reader.

Sketching Light: An Illustrated Tour of the Possibilities of Flash (Voices That Matter), by Joe McNally

Following up on the great success of The Moment It Clicks and The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes, legendary magazine photographer Joe McNally takes us on another memorable ride with Sketching Light, another trip into the land of light--but this time running the gamut from small flash to big flash, and everywhere in between.

Of course, Joe includes coverage of Nikon Speedlights, but he also covers big flash, as well as "in-between" lights as the Elinchrom Quadra. The exploration of new technology, as well as the explanation of older technology. No matter what equipment Joe uses and discusses, the most important element of Joe's instruction is that it is straightforward, complete, and honest. No secrets are held back, and the principles he talks about apply generally to the shaping and quality of light, not just to an individual model or brand of flash.

He tells readers what works and what doesn't via his let's-see-what-happens approach, he shows how he sets up his shots with plentiful sketches and behind-the-scenes production shots, and he does it all with the intelligence, clarity, and wisdom that can only come from shooting in the field for 30 years for the likes of National Geographic, Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated--not to mention the wit and humor of a clearly warped (if gifted) mind.

Like Sitting Down With the Reigning Master of Flash Photography
    By Syl Arena
If you are a student of light, then consider Joe McNally`s new book Sketching Light to be a must-read. Sitting down with Sketching Light is like sitting down for a beer with Joe as he talks you through his favorite pix in a photo album. The conversation will wander, stories will be spun, jokes will be told, detailed insights will be shared, advice will be given, and you'll walk away grateful for the opportunity.

Short bits to know about 'Sketching Light'...

    >The book is Nikon-centric. Joe is Nikon-centric. Don't let this worry you. If you shoot Canon, or Sony, or any other brand, don't despair. Strip out all the Nikonian jargon and 'Sketching Light' remains a heavyweight when it comes to lighting. (And, if you shoot Canon, check out Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites -- written by yours truly. It will give you all the buttons and dials info that you need to drive a Canon Speedlite.)

    > 'Sketching Light' is a book about the possibilities of flash and it covers the full spectrum. Joe shoots Speedlights. Joe shoots big lights. Sometimes you need just a breath of on-camera fill flash from a Nikon SB-910. Sometimes you need the punch of an Elinchrom Ranger. Sometimes you need one light. Sometimes you need to haul out every light that you can get your hands on.

    > There are plenty of set shots that show Joe and his gear in action. You'll also find Joe's signature lighting diagrams--drawn by hand on napkins and sketch pads--for nearly every shoot in the book. I recommend keeping a highlighter and a black marker on hand so that you can annotate your "aha!" moments as you read.

    > Yes, there are photos in the book that no mere-mortal could make. Joe is, after all, the Indiana Jones of photographers. Yet, there are also dozens of shots that you can make today with gear that you likely have around you right now.

    > There are no photo captions in the book. At first, you'll hate this. You've likely grown accustomed to flipping through photo books, pausing at a pic, and having the caption give you the basics so that you can move on. 'Sketching Light' makes you earn your knowledge. I guarantee you, however, that as you read Joe's narratives and decode his photos, you'll be a stronger photographer for your efforts.

    > This is not a beginner's book that lays a foundation of basic concepts and then layers new ideas on top. Rather, Joe starts right in at an intermediate level and keep moving. Think of 'Sketching Light' as a long conversation that jumps around and you won't be disappointed. Each "chapter" is really another "hey, let me tell you about this now...." And yes, you can jump around 'Sketching Light' and read the chapters for the pix that interest you today and then jump to another spot tomorrow.

    > 'Sketching Light' may give you deja vu. If you've read Joe's blog, watched his videos on Kelby Training, or attended one of his seminars/workshops, then you've likely seen some of these pix and heard some of these stories before. I see this as being like catching up with an old friend rather than a shortcoming. Of course, there were pages and pages of material in 'Sketching Light' that I'd never seen before.

While wrapped in a cover that says "flash", for me, 'Sketching Light' is really about vision and using whatever gear you have to craft images that express that vision. It's about dreaming big and having the courage to fail. It's a book that says "go out there and create the images that only you can create."

Awesome and inspring... and an important note on Nikon vs. Canon
    By Hankk
Amazing book. He's a frikkin' genius writer, because he's so uninhibited and confident and smart that he gives you a brain-dump of everything in his mind. Take from it the bits you like, run with 'em, and have fun making some awesome shots.

If you haven't used a lot of flash before, you'll sometimes read over a page and have no idea what he's talking about. WTF? Not that he's overly technical... kind of the opposite, that he's so gushing and enthusiastic and dropping all the hip terms for everything ("start with a bit of a hot rim and then back it off, 'cause in a sidelight situation it's gonna blow it out by a stop... then it gets piped backed to the lens and baby, it's dark out there!"), that it's hard to bring him out of orbit and back into the land of 'OK, what button do I push?' But stick with it. Read the book, shoot, read it again, shoot some more. You'll get it.

McNally gets a lot of attention for using flashes in extraordinarily complex setups -- and yeah, he does. But he's always focusing on the people... the story... the eyes. He's not a landscape photographer. His stories about interacting with his subjects (models, celebrities, musicians, quarterbacks, astronomers, bagpipe makers) are what this is really about.

This book has longer stories, more details and more diagrams compared with the previous books. If you don't have his other books (Hot Shoe Diaries, or The Moment it Clicks) and you want to learn his techniques, *get this one instead*. It's fatter, it's got more writing, and the narratives are longer and more intricate. This one is more chapter-based with various techniques, and the other two are closer to "here's a cool photo, and here's a page about how I took it." If you have the other two and love him, then get this one since it's essentially all-new material, and his technique and philosophy are so useful and inspiring, that the more you read and see of his work, the better your photos will end up as a result.

*** Important note: McNally uses only Nikon and makes only passing mention of Canon. Everything is virtually interchangeable, *but* there's one important difference about flash exposure you need to know if you're a Canon shooter. All over the book, he's talking about the EV exposure compensation being a global adjustment (e.g., p. 213, 345) -- that is, if you change the EV on the camera, you program underexposure into the flash as well. That's how it works on Nikon, but *not* on Canon!

On Nikon: the camera EV and flash EV are indeed linked: lowering the camera EV lowers the flash output. So, to highlight the foreground, you go -2 EV on the camera, and then back up +2 EV on the flash to compensate.

But on Canon, this is *not true*: the camera EV and flash EV are independent. Dropping the camera EV drops the ambient exposure, but keeps the flash output the same! So to do the same as above on Canon, you want to do -2 EV on the camera, and leave the flash at 0 EV. If you do what McNally says, you'll end up over-flashing your subject on Canon.

This difference is *not* well documented, but you can find some more info on it at Canon's web page -- Google for "Canon EOS speedlite system tips" and click on the tips by photographer Stephen Wilkes, and there are a lot of sample photos for how this works. Neither system is better or worse -- but you do need to be aware of the differences!

*** Update February 2012. Nikon's new D4 will ship soon. The D4 offers the option to set the flash level using the Canon way, not the Nikon way... that is, on the D4, doing a -EV on the exposure will now leave the flash EV unaffected. Nice change, since it means you need to do one adjustment, not two, to lower the ambient level. It appears that this is an option (not a full-time change), and that this applies to the D4 only, not the D800. For details, search for an article called "Exposure Compensation When Using i-TTL Gets Easier with the D4" on Nikon's site.

    The Pied Piper of light
    By Christine Merchent
Joe McNally (the author) is a gifted story-teller, both visually and with the written word. His images pull you in, stir emotions, cause you to linger over them in awe, and finally think, "How did he do that?" In this book he tells you.

He describes the scene he's facing, sometimes showing you preproduction shots. He shares what he was thinking, what did he want in the shot, and what he wanted to exclude with a shallow depth of field. He tells you the technical details that we photographers tend to obsess over such as F-stop, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance (which surprisingly was often auto WB). But he reminds us all that those are the settings for that particular time and location. A new day would likely require new settings. He discusses all the trade-offs between small flash, and big studio type lights, and why he chooses one over the other.

He talks about things I would have never thought of like linking three SC-29 cords together so you can still use TTL. Other gems:
    * Why your fill light should come from the same angle as your main light (so you don't make crossing shadows), and how soft it should be.
    * Why frosted glass is such a great diffuser
    * A face is a 180-degree half circle, with various exposure readings at different angles
    * He uses and explains high-speed sync and it's limitation of reducing the illumination on the subject.
    * "...shutter speed is like a curtain you pull back. The more you open (slow) the shutter, the more light pours in." Yes, I knew the effect of shutter speed, but that describes it so eloquently.
He does a great job of showing very clearly the difference between flash that is near the camera, and then putting it on a light stand and diffusing it in several different ways. It's a wonderful exploration of the subject.

He is self-deprecating, and just down right funny. And he is painfully honest about his mistakes, which makes us all think, "Hey even Joe McNally has dropped equipment into the river while photographing Gregory Hines!" He got his tripod back, and Gitzo repaired it since it has a lifetime warranty. McNally says he turned it in as "water damage", because it sounded better than "outright stupidity".

He speaks like an experienced photographer, for instance when he was shooting a man and wanted the moon with some detail in the shot he used, "600mm f/4, plus a TC-17e II teleconverter, which makes the overall lens almost an f/8, effectively." That's not to say a beginning photographer can't benefit from this book, because one surely can, it just isn't photography 101. If you want a more basic book try his LIFE Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros.

With his previous books,The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters and The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes I would study them and think about each lighting set-up and experiment with something similar, for instance with gels, trying to emulate what he had demonstrated. Which brings me to all the gear. He is a master with light shapers, grips, and lights. Simply thinking that if I had all of his gear, I could replicate his images would be lunacy, and expensive. But I do take and study his suggestions. I then work on mastering one element and/or one piece of gear at a time. Once I'm comfortable with that light shaper, then I allow myself to consider the shiny new toy like the Elinchrom EL 26187 27.5-Inch Rotalux Deep Octa :)

Frontier Justice: The Global Refugee Crisis and What To Do About It, by Andy Lamey

Frontier Justice is a gripping, eye-opening exploration of the world-wide refugee crisis. Combining reporting, history and political philosophy, Andy Lamey sets out to explain the story behind the radical increase in the global number of asylum-seekers, and the effects of North America and Europe’s increasing unwillingness to admit them.

He follows the extraordinary efforts of a set of Yale law students who sued the U.S. government on behalf of a group of refugees imprisoned at Guantnamo Bay; he recounts one refugee family's harrowing journey from Saddam Hussein's Iraq to contemporary Australia via the world's most dangerous ocean crossing; and he explores the fascinating case of Ahmed Ressam, the so-called Millennium bomber who filed a refugee claim in Canada before attempting to blow up the Los Angeles airport. Lamey casts new light on a host of broader subjects, from the reasons why terrorists who pose as refugees have an overwhelming failure rate to the hidden benefits of multiculturalism.

Throughout Lamey's account, he focuses on the rights of people in search of asylum, and how those rights are routinely violated. But Frontier Justice does not merely point out problems. This book offers a bold case for an original solution to the international asylum crisis, one which draws upon Canada's unique approach to asylum-seekers. At the centre of the book is a new blueprint for how the rights of refugees might be enforced, and a vision of human rights that is ultimately optimistic and deeply affirmative.

In exploring one of the most pressing questions of our age, Lamey provides an absorbing and unsettling look at a world in which, as he notes, there are many rights for citizens, few for human beings.

    Review
“Andy Lamey tackles this timely and critical debate with an intellect and a passion that are formidable. Frontier Justice could, quiet possibly, have a lasting effect on policy in Canada and elsewhere.”
    —The Globe and Mail

"Compulsively readable, at times heartbreaking and super-smart."
    —Jeet Heer, literary journalist

"A book that pulses with intellectual curiosity and energy . . . a calm, lucid voice in a a debate often sidetracked by terrorist panic and hypocrisy about human rights."
    —The Chronicle Herald (Halifax)

"Despite its grounding in political theory and legal history, this is not a political-science textbook. Lamey introduces the reader to real refugees, offering portraits, for example, of Haitians detained at Guantanamo Bay before and during the Clinton administration. There are even sections where the book becomes a page-turner."
    —The Ottawa Citizen

"Frontier Justice provides what the debate over asylum and refugee claims so desperately needs: fresh thinking and historical perspective. Here is a wonderful writer tackling a subject, and a debate, as big as his talent."
    —Paul Wells, Maclean's columnist

“[A] superb and immensely readable work …”
—Doug Saunders, Literary Review of Canada

"Andy Lamey has produced a persuasive argument for changes to refugee systems around the world."
    —The Winnipeg Free Press

In March of 1933, German politicians voted to grant their new chancellor, Adolf Hitler, the power to govern with impunity. Members of the Nazi party physically attacked parliamentarians before the vote to influence its outcome, but this terror campaign, it soon turned out, was nothing next to what would follow. It was suddenly normal for critics of the government to be beaten in the street. The most outspoken anti-Nazi activists became the first victims of the newly established concentration camp system, at the same time as anti-Semitic decrees expelled Jews from the civil service and other positions. In response to the wave of persecution, thousands of people began to flee the country. Among them were a young Jewish woman and her mother, who, shortly after the initial anti-Jewish laws were passed, left their home in Berlin for the last time.

The frightened women made their way south to the Erzgebirge mountain range, which marked Germany’s frontier with Czechoslovakia. Neither one had a passport or visa. They were familiar, however, with a German exile group in Prague, which had set up a network of safe houses for escaping Jews and leftists. Armed with this knowledge, the two Berliners went to the mountain town of Carlsbad, where they sought out a kindhearted family who could provide them with a simple yet invaluable means of avoiding the border patrol: the house they lived in had its front door in Germany and its back door in Czechoslovakia. The two fugitives were taken in by their benefactors while it was light out, offered dinner, and released into the night. When their feet touched Czech soil, two things happened. They became refugees. And they set in motion a major episode in the history of human rights.

The escaping Jews were Hannah Arendt, then twenty-six, and her mother, Martha Beerwald. Why was their flight from fascism so remarkable? The answer has to do with Hannah Arendt’s later transformation into one of the great political thinkers of the twentieth century. Arendt’s philosophy was influenced by her experience as a refugee. So perhaps the best place to start in understanding Hannah Arendt, and seeing what we can learn from her about human rights, is by retracing the steps of her journey. As we will see, it is a journey that has much in common with that of refugees even today.

Arendt did not stay long in Czechoslovakia. After sending her mother to the relative safety of East Prussia (from where she would again flee the Nazis five years later), Arendt continued on to Switzerland and then to France, where she was reunited with her husband. Gnther Stern, a communist and friend of the famous playwright Bertolt Brecht, had fled Germany several months in advance of his wife and mother-in-law. He was prompted to do so after Brecht had an address book confiscated by the Gestapo, which Stern feared would shortly result in the arrest of everyone whose name it contained. Now, in Paris, he and his wife were part of a wave of twenty-five thousand German refugees, 85 percent of them Jewish, who had poured into France, a greater number than that received by any other country.

Arendt’s exile in Paris was not a happy time. Even before they became refugees, she and her husband had many differences. When it came to politics, for example, she never shared his commitment to communism. (Before the Nazis came to power, in fact, she was barely interest in politics at all, and always dated her political awakening to the rise of Hitler.) Now Arendt and her husband had little to unite them save the hardscrabble urgencies of refugee existence. When Stern left Paris for New York in 1936, his marriage to Arendt had long been over in all but name. Things were hardly better for Arendt on a political level. The arrival of the German refugees, even though they represented a minuscule portion of France’s population, was regarded in France as a major crisis. To be sure, there were people who spoke out on the refugees’ behalf. They included not only French Jews but Socialists, liberals, left-wing Catholics and a few stray conservatives. But throughout the 1930s, these partisans of “hospitality,” to use the term they most frequently invoked, had to engage in a fierce political battle with conservative and centre-left politicians, rank-and-file union members (union leaders tended to be pro-refugee) and business groups, all of whom filled the air with cries of “France for the French!” and denounced the Jews as economic parasites and “undesirables.”

France’s refugee crisis came to a head at the end of the decade. By this point Arendt’s personal situation had improved somewhat: she was employed by a French Jewish charity and had managed to have her mother join her from Prussia. There was even a new man in her life, another German (albeit non-Jewish) refugee named Heinrich Blcher. But after Hitler’s annexation of Austria in 1938, which sent another wave of desperate Jews into France, the political situation of every refugee in Paris deteriorated. France introduced repressive laws making admission much more difficult. Jews who were already present were barred from holding certain jobs or were sent back to Germany. Others were turned away at the border. A mood of despair spread through the Jewish community, and many refugees chose suicide. After a Polish Jew living in Paris shot a German embassy official, the Nazis responded with Kristallnacht—the night of broken glass— burning and looting Jewish homes, shops and synagogues across Germany. Anti-refugee voices in France were already alleging a Jewish conspiracy to drag France into a needless war with Germany; Kristallnacht, perversely, was taken as evidence for this view and resulted in calls for harsh reprisals against refugees. Paris’s Jews lived in terror of what would happen next.

The answer came in the fall of 1939. Hostilities between France and Germany had now formally begun (albeit in the form of the phony war, before the bombs began to fall), and France ordered that all German men with suspicious political backgrounds be interned. It didn’t matter that Heinrich Blcher and thousands of others had fled Germany precisely because they were Communists, and so would be the last people on earth to engage in pro-Nazi activities. Blcher was sent to a labour camp in a small French village, sleeping with two dozen other men in a barn that left them exposed to the constant cold rain, where he soon became ill.

Through desperate lobbying, Arendt managed to secure Blcher’s release (a friend of hers tracked down the widow of a police prefect who agreed to serve as his guarantor). When Blcher returned to Paris he and Arendt married. But instead of a honeymoon, they had to contend with a new internment order—one that now included most German women. Four months after their wedding, Arendt and her husband reported to separate sports stadiums in Paris. Arendt was made to sleep on the stone bleachers of the Winter Velodrome alongside other Jewish women branded “enemy aliens.” Every time a plane passed overhead they feared it was a German bomber come to end their lives. Finally, after a week, Arendt and the other female refugees were taken to a camp near Gurs, a town in southwest France. Constant rains had turned the camp into a muddy swamp. Although inmates were not forced to work, the residents kept themselves busy emptying the latrines and engaging in other chores to stave off depression.

During her internment, with the war situation growing worse, and not knowing whether she would ever see her husband again, Arendt was overcome with thoughts of killing herself. It was something many other camp residents considered. At one point, there was talk among the refugees of committing suicide en masse, as a form of protest against the way they had been treated by the French government. But the inmates soon decided that this would only please their captors. As Arendt later wrote, “When some of us suggested that we had been shipped there pour crever [to be snuffed out] in any case, the general mood turned suddenly into a violent courage of life.”

Several weeks after Arendt’s arrival in Gurs, German troops invaded Paris. All communications broke down and the camp descended into chaos. Many women decided to stay, afraid to leave the one place their husbands would at least know to look for them. When Gurs later came under the jurisdiction of the collaborationist Vichy government, most of these inmates were handed over to the Nazis for extermination. Arendt was lucky: she had somewhere she could go. The same Paris friend who had secured Heinrich Blcher’s release, a wealthy German exile, was renting a house near the southern French town of Montauban. Arendt could reach it by travelling on foot and hitchhiking. Montauban was in total confusion when Arendt arrived. Many homes had been left empty in the panic of war, and the mayor had chosen to express his opposition to the new Vichy government in northern France by turning empty buildings over to former internees. As a result, thousands of refugees were streaming into Montauban from all across France. They slept on empty floors, dragging in every mattress they could find, creating conditions almost as crowded and cramped as in the camps they had just escaped.

It was against this backdrop that Hannah Arendt had one of the happiest experiences of her life. One day she found herself on the main avenue of Montauban. There, amid piles of mattresses, furniture and garbage, she saw her husband walking down the street. Blcher’s camp had been evacuated when the Nazis took Paris, and he had joined the great migration of people—travelling on bicycles, in the backs of trucks, on foot with everything they could carry—streaming into unoccupied southern France. Surrounded by crowds of refugees scavenging for scraps of food and tobacco, others seeking word of missing lo...

    Eye-opening!

Andy Lamey's "Frontier Justice" is a heart-breaking book. While I don't know anyone who would say that life for refugees would be easy, refugee life seems to be a particular sort of horrific, something that Lamey paints for readers without being lurid. Lamey does a brilliant job illustrating the humanitarian problems that arise because of how refugees are treated by governments and by regular citizens around the world.

This is a well-written, well-thought out, very thorough book. Lamey does a fantastic job of laying out evidence so that he isn't only appealing to people's hearts when talking about what can be such a charged issue. He lays everything out in a logical, smart way that really appeals to a reader's higher intellect. At the same time, his writing style is very smart and compelling; it isn't too often that I have had a non-fiction book that was also non-memoir that I had a lot of trouble putting down.

    A humorous and heartwarming story
    By KidsReads
Eighth-grade student Kevin Spencer is cute and funny --- and a bit full of himself. In his 14 years, he has developed interpersonal skills with the knowledge that "the best way to make other people like you is to show them how great you think they are."

In the past, Kevin's manipulative ways of getting people to like him and do what he wants have been successful to some degree. Now he's working on romance. Kevin considers himself the "most romantic guy you'll ever meet," except that he's never had a girlfriend. In fact, he has never even gone out on a real date. He's hoping to change all that by asking Katrina Maria Zabinski to a middle-school dance. Tina, whose laugh "sounds like bells or angels," is the most beautiful girl he has ever seen.

One day, after working up the courage to spring the question on Tina, Kevin walks into the cafeteria and sees her sitting at the lunch table with another guy. To make matters worse, Cash Devine, the new kid at school, has the looks and confidence of a "male-model wannabee."

To win Tina's heart, and learn all about romance, Kevin decides to take a scientific approach and create experiments to observe the behaviors of test subjects. By applying the principles of scientific method, he believes he can understand the chemistry between males and females. In Kevin's mind, to unleash his "inner Casanova," he has to tap into his "inner umm, Copernicus."

The budding Casanova's experiments begin with his family. His observation of his parents, with the help of his young neighbor Markie, ends dismally. Frequently married and often divorced Auntie Buzz doesn't have the best track record in the lasting romance department. Kevin turns to his sister Sarah for help, but she turns the tables on him, which is an eye-opening experience. Kevin's observations of his hockey-playing brother Daniel and some other skating stars yield promising results. Then there are his experiments with health-nut and best friend JonPaul, along with friends Dash and Wheels. His direct attempt at questioning Connie Shaw gets messy, but he learns an important lesson.

While implementing his scientific approach, Kevin reaffirms Sir Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion "that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." He also comes to agree with Francis Bacon that "Truth emerges more readily from error than from confusion." In the end, Kevin discovers that the scientific mind is no match for action.

CRUSH is the follow-up to Gary Paulsen's LIAR, LIAR and FLAT BROKE, and readers of these previous books will recognize Kevin's friends and family, and will be introduced to a few new characters. Deftly woven into the story line are some scientific terms and principles. Seen through Kevin's worldview, CRUSH is a humorous and heartwarming story about the wonderful and mysterious matters of the heart.

    Kevin….Ambitious….AND Crushing over a Girl….Cute Read!!!!
    By NICOLE S
Another one of Gary Paulsen's books. It too, is a quick and easy read. Again, Kevin is ambitious, but if he continues on the track he's on, he is likely to lose his opportunity to date Tina Zabinski. If every child was as ambitious as Kevin, they would have an impressive life resume.

For instance, in the first book, "Liar, Liar",- Kevin was deceptive calculated and manipulative; yet creative in his approach in the second book, "Flat Broke,"- Kevin knew he had no money- so he was calculated and manipulative, yet creative in his approach, and in this book, "Crush"- he knows his past history, so he doesn't want to mess up his chances he MIGHT have with TINA sooooo-

If you read this book, you will see through Kevin's eyes, a need to apply the scientific method in approaching a girl properly so that he doesn't make the same mistakes he's made in the past run-in's with Tina- the girl of his dreams. BUT will he have time because there is a "New Kid on the Block"- Cash Devine, or is the Scientific Method really necessary in the dating department?

Again, Cute, Quick and Easy Read. Another fun one by Gary Paulsen. In my opinion, you will enjoy it. Happy Reading!

    Kristi's Book Nook via CLCD
    By Kristi Bernard
Have you ever noticed how hard young love can be? Kevin Spencer has got a ridiculously bad crush on Tina, unfortunately, he isn't real good at asking beautiful girls out on dates. But, he has a plan. Basically he is going to take it slow and play it cool before he makes his move, that is until Tina is caught hanging out with Cash Devine, a new cute boy at school. Kevin now decides it might make more sense to take a more scientific approach regarding matters of the heart. Kevin attempted to observe his parents but that was a disaster. He cooked a fantastic dinner for them only to have them become suspicious, clumsy and wonder why he was spying on them. He went to Auntie Buzz, who lived over the garage, but her advice was outdated and a little nutty. In a last attempt of desperation he went to his sister Sarah. To his surprise she contacted her girl clan and set up a boot camp for Kevin, but that didn't work either. All Kevin got was a bunch of criticism from the know-it-all girls who, at the end of the day, thought he was a lost cause. Kevin then decided he must get aggressive. He needed to observe a relationship from the very beginning so that he can learn how it develops and ultimately how it works. His great idea is to help his brother find a girlfriend, with the hopes of learning how to get and keep Tina' attention. Paulsen has created another hilarious tale for middle grade boys to enjoy and laugh along with the characters. School shenanigans of adolescents will have young readers laughing and turning the pages for more of this really fast paced read.

    Well Worth It

I started using this guide six months ago and am amazed at how we, as women, have the power to exercise and train ourselves to experience more pleasure for ourselves and our partners. I highly recommend the techniques for obvious reasons, but also to increase your sexual confidence, especially for those who have experienced childbirth. I also recommend investing in the consultation with a Pompoir expert as suggested in the book to get the full benefit of the techniques that are taught.

Leading the Transformation: Applying Agile and DevOps Principles at Scale, by Gary Gruver, Tommy Mouser

Software is becoming more and more important across a broad range of industries, yet most technology executives struggle to deliver software improvements their businesses require.

Leading-edge companies like Amazon and Google are applying DevOps and Agile principles to deliver large software projects faster than anyone thought possible. But most executives don’t understand how to transform their current legacy systems and processes to scale these principles across their organizations.

Leading the Transformation is executive guide, providing a clear framework for improving development and delivery. Instead of the traditional Agile and DevOps approaches that focus on improving the effectiveness of teams, this book targets the coordination of work across teams in large organizations—an improvement that executives are uniquely positioned to lead.

If you want to understand how to lead a Continuous Delivery or DevOps transformation in your company, there’s no better book than this. Concise, practical, and based on hard-won executive experience, this book is essential reading for every IT executive. (Jez Humble, VP, Chef)

This book goes beyond theory and deeply into reality-based application. (Greg Nicastro, EVP Product Development and SaaS Operations, Veracode)

It’s long past the time when executives who are looking for better performance from software development can expect an “Agile transformation” to solve their problems. Today’s wise executive will know enough about the underlying principles of software systems to ask the right questions and make sure that their organization is solving the right problems. That’s where this book comes in—it contains just enough theory to inform executives about critical issues and just enough detail to clarify what’s important and why. (Mary Poppendieck, Author of The Lean Mindset and the Lean Software Development series)

Leading the Transformation is a critical asset for any leadership in a large development environment seeking to transform the organization from the swamp of restriction to the freeway of efficient delivery. The book provides real-life data and solid advice for any leader embarking on or in the middle of an enterprise delivery transformation. (Lance Sleeper, Senior Manager of Operations, American Airlines)

Before you undertake a major change in your development process, you want to learn from people who have gone before you. Gary and Tommy draw on their experience to prepare you on how to plan and what to expect as you roll out Agile/DevOps methodology in your enterprise. Reading this book, I learnt valuable lessons on planning a scaled-out Agile transformation and what signposts to look for along the way as we embarked on the transformation journey at Cisco. (Vinod Peris, VP Engineering, Routing & Optical, Cisco)

    Enterprise Agile and DevOps
    By Jason A. Cox
Gary and Tommy provide practical and proven advice on applying some of the most impactful Agile and DevOps benefits to large scale organizations (100 or more engineers). The focus of this book is on applying the "basic principles" of Agile and DevOps at the enterprise level, not just at the team level. The authors believe and provide evidence through real world examples how this global perspective is more effective at delivering solid business results.

"The first step executives need to understand about our approach is that it is paramount to begin with business objectives"

On empowerment: "...as leaders we feel it is important, whenever possible, to provide the framework with the objectives and let the team have as much design flexibility in defining how the work will get done. It provides them with more interesting work, and they take more ownership of the results. In addition, when the situation changes, those doing the work are likely to sense it and adapt more quickly than an executive would."

On planning for agility: "...if you are going to take advantage of the quick feedback from your customers, you will need to ensure your planning process have been modified to provide a flexible response to what you learn."

On enterprise-level continuous improvement: "...must continuously engage with the organization and its people throughout the journey to get a qualitative feel for what is and isn't working."

On culture and transparency: "...make sure the objectives are based on what the teams are actually doing and achieving. This kind of collaboration helps build a culture of trust." "...with transparency comes a great ability to fix issues quickly."

On planning and real goals: "...organizations need to decide whether their primary objective is to deliver long-term accurate plans...or if it is to deliver business value to its customers."

Gary and Tommy treat these important areas with practical examples:
    * Enterprise Agile transition and planning
    * Enterprise-scale continuous improvement
    * Enterprise DevOps
    * Test Automation
    * Culture shift to Main Trunk Development
    * Automation, Development Pipeline and Continuous Delivery
    * The Role of Project Management
    * Improving Stability

This is a MUST READ for IT executives interested in transforming the way they leverage software to run their businesses.
    By Derek J. Langone
This book is a MUST READ for executives interested in transforming the way they leverage software to run their businesses and interact with their own customers.

Gary does a masterful job of outlining the requirements for executives to lead the transformation effort and helps to identify how planning and process are just as critical as tool selection. Often Continuous Delivery and the more vague DevOps push is a bottoms up effort lead by coders. This is a great way to add velocity, but without a centralized plan and standardization across an enterprise true benefits can't be realized. Gary takes the time to boil down these massive concepts in to digestible and actionable bites. This is a book about transforming at scale, in large enterprises with complex environments.

Gary has emerged as a principal authority in the Agile transformation space and his advising and presentations are not to be missed.

I recommend the book highly and look forward to continued writings from Gary and his team.

“Leading the Transformation” is a short and powerful read for ...
    By Maria Loughlin
“Leading the Transformation” is a short and powerful read for executives who are scaling Agile and DevOps in their organizations. Two attributes make this book stand out among the thousands of Agile and DevOps sources.

First it speaks to software executives. Strong leadership is critical to scale any transformation. Yet most Agile sources focus exclusively on implementation teams, resulting in uncoordinated Agile and DevOps “pockets of excellence”. This book provides a blueprint for executives to scale the transformation across a large organization.

Second the guidance is concrete and actionable. This book complements the theory with clear, real-world recommendations. It is explicit about how IT Leads can set goals, prioritize activities across teams, establish trust and transparency, and remove bottlenecks. The book is clearly written and well-structured to support a deep dive into an area of investment (e.g. QA processes, CI/CD) or an end-to-end review to form a comprehensive plan.

Bottom line – read this book and share with the IT leaders in your organization!
