Who will Lucy and her dog, Mr. Barker, see on their fairy-tale adventure? Peek through from scene to scene to guess who they might meet next.

Lucy is reading a fairy tale to Mr. Barker, but her dog has other ideas. When he jumps out the window — landing in a cottage with a broken chair, three bowls of porridge, and a little golden-haired girl — Lucy is right behind him. Goldilocks would rather not be there when the bears return, so she joins Lucy and Mr. Barker as they continue on their way, adding a trio of pigs, a boy with a goose, and a just-awakened princess during their journey. What happens next? Cutout windows throughout add visual surprises to this lighthearted fractured fairy tale.

Review
Ahlberg's charming line-and-wash artwork features beautifully detailed, distinctive settings filled with visual clues indicating which traditional tales are taking place...Just as Janet and Allan Ahlberg’s preschool classic Each Peach Pear Plum (1979) introduced nursery rhymes, their daughter’s engaging picture book offers a playful introduction to fairy tales.
—Booklist (starred review)

Ahlberg (The Goldilocks Variations) delivers a lighthearted romp through several fairy tales...In many ways, this feels like a tender, 21st-century companion to Ahlberg’s parents’ classic Each Peach Pear Plum; as in that book, a gentle sense of humor (this giant up the bean stalk has knuckle tattoos) and cozy, detail-rich artwork should keep children engrossed and amused for hours.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A hole in the book’s cover spotlights Mr. Barker, Lucy’s pet dog, and gets the ball rolling on the peek-through device that teases upcoming events as the story as it traverses multiple fairy tales...The where-are- they element is a captivating and effective device, and the die-cut windows provide visual links between the various locations. Within the daintily attractive watercolor illustrations, numerous referential details (the bears’ oven has three settings: too cold, just right, and too hot, and their shopping list includes "batteries for burglar alarm") add to the fun.
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

A fairy-tale mashup light as a feather and pretty as a sunny morning.
—Kirkus Reviews

Sturdy pages will ensure that the book holds up through repeated journeys as readers enjoy many trips through the different peek-through openings to discover in each scene.
—School Library Journal

"A Peek-Through Story" with cutout windows that add extra delight to this enormously clever, highly entertaining fractured fairy, this choice is bound to be requested for repeated readings time and time again.
—Books to Borrow...Books to Buy (column from Kendal A. Rautzhan)

When I read this book I thought it would be too old for my 3 1/2 year old grandson. I discovered he knows his fairy tales and I will
give him the book the next time I see him. I do think this book is not all the clever and the design is pretty ho-hum.
It got this great reveiw in the WSJ so I bought it.

Guess the Fairy Tale
By Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge
When Lucy’s dog, Mr. Barker, loses interest in the story she’s reading to him he leaps out of her bedroom window through a cut-out in the page. Lucy follows him through successive cut-outs into a series of familiar fairy tale worlds: a house with a golden-haired girl (where three bears chase them away), three pigs in a house built of straw (where a wolf chases them away), an oversized house with a boy holding a goose (where a giant chases them away), and finally a room with a princess who is sound asleep (where a bad fairy chases them away). Lucy and the characters she’s rescued land safely back in her room where they shut their pursuers outside the window and settle in for a quiet bedtime story. About a troll. The first few read-throughs will give young listeners a chance to guess what fairy tale world they’ve landed in; subsequent readings will provide the opportunity to linger over the dozens of details in Ahlberg’s delightfully busy watercolor illustrations. The pages are extra sturdy and a leap through each clever cut-out (a window, a door, a hole in some Swiss cheese,) provides a backward peek at the danger just escaped. The resourceful Lucy renders some age-old bogey men (and women!) a bit less fearsome…just in time for bed.

Cute story- high quality design
By BrittyMama
Summary: Lucy sits down to read Mr. Barker (her dog) some fairy tales. When she notices he is not listening, she puts down the book and follows him out the window and lands right in the middle of the home of the Three Bears. They meet Goldilocks and she joins them on their journey, as they walk under the staircase and end up inside the home of the Three Little Pigs. On and on they go, visiting several famous stories such as Sleeping Beauty and Jack & the Beanstalk (and of course eventually ending up back home). Though Mr. Barker didn't want to sit still to listen to the stories, it turns out he just wanted to live them instead!

This book is filled with fun references to some of the most famous children's stories. I would recommend reading these with a child who is already familiar with them, as they will appreciate the book a bit more. One of the things I love most about the book is the very high quality pages. They are "peek though" pages (little cut-outs on areas where there are doors, windows, etc.) and the pages are as thick as cardstock. The front and back covers are also very thick (I don't know what it is called, but it has a canvas-y texture to it).

Overall, a cute story with very high quality design.
