“Witty, macabre, beautiful and poignant.”—The Independent on Sunday
These stories were collected in the tribal areas of the Pakistan-Afghan border, a region once described as “the last free place on earth,” where the caravan routes from Persia, India, and China historically converged.
Blending wit, fantasy, comedy, and romance, these tales reflect the Pashtun code of honor and way of life.
Aisha Ahmad researched Pashtun women in the tribal areas and worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization.
Roger Boase is the author of The Origin and Meaning of Courtly Love and The Troubadour Revival.

Highly recommended ! ! !
By Sheraz Ali
I first saw this book sitting on my friends' bookshelf. I asked him about it and he said "It's really good. It tells you why certain Pashtuns are the way they are and helps you understand the superstitious part of the culture." I asked him if I can read a few pages and he told me to help myself. So, I grabbed it and started reading. Sure enough, he was right! I finished this book in two days after borrowing it and decided to buy it. I grew up listening to some of these stories from my uncle. I always wondered if he was making them up as he went or did he really hear them from someone else? He claimed that he used to go to his friends house where his friends uncle would sit the children down and tell them these stories. A couple of the stories are almost the same with some twists and different characters/names/endings. Nevertheless, this book is written fairly well and does have a few grammatical errors, nothing that changes the meaning of the stories though. I highly recommend it!

Reflections of Pashtun culture
By Muhammad Arif
This book contains most of my childhood stories and many more. The stories reflect Pashtun culture to great extent. I believe the prose could have been better. However, still its a good book and help understand many wise aspects of Pashturn culture.

Interesting, But Not Really For Kids
By Neodoering
This book was an average collection of folktales from Peshawar, Pakistan, a city which has deep Pakistani and Afghan influences. This collection delivers monsters, heroes, magic, and holy men. There are a few glimpses into the culture of the area, especially in the misogynistic pieces and the ones where the hero vows to perform an honor killing. I kept waiting for young women to get acid thrown in their faces, but if there were stories like this, the editors got rid of them. It was like going back in time to a more primitive level of culture, where men are in charge and women keep their mouths shut. There are a few stories with strong female protagonists, but mostly the females are fought over by men. By the time I was done with this collection I was feeling crushed by the weight of the cultural expectations in this book. It was interesting to spend a little time with these people, but I definitely would not want to stick around very long. Enter a land where the Sexual Revolution never took place, that takes its cues from the Middle Ages. I don't know if I would read these stories to children. Maybe a few of the tales, but not the misogynist ones. It's good, but Inea Bushnaq's collection, *Arab Folktales*, is better.
