Structured Fun

I found this book to be a good guide as to how to be less formal but more productive in team meetings. Though I am a one man business, I do work strategically with my clients and have find myself using some of these techniques to get everyone communicating towards a common goal. Quick and easy read that is impactful and enjoyable.

Waiting for the Parade is John Murrell's play, set in Calgary during Word War II, in which five women gather to work for the war effort while their men are away. Waiting for the Parade was first performed by Alberta Theatre Projects, Calgary. Subsequently, it has been performed by Northern Light Theatre, Edmonton; Bastion Theatre, Victoria; Tarragon Theatre, Toronto; the National Arts Centre, Ottawa; Centaur Theatre, Montreal; and at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London, England.

About the Author
John Murrell was born in 1945 in Texas, but has lived for many years in Calgary, Alberta. He has been playwright-in-residence with Alberta Theatre Projects from 1975 to 1976, associate director of the Stratford Festival from 1977 to 1978, and head of the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts Playwrights Colony in 1986. In 1988 he was appointed Head of the Canada Council’s Theatre Section. Murell’s 1980 play Waiting for the Parade has become a classic repertoire piece in theatres in the English-speaking world.

Set in Calgary during World War II, these 24 scenes follow the experiences of 5 Canadian women who form an uneasy alliance born of loneliness and tumult during an edgy wait for the parade that will herald the end.
There's Catherine, abandoned by her impulsively enlisted husband, Janet, a wartime dynamo conpensating for a secret shame, and Eve, a pacifist school-teacher hard hit by the concept of unquestioning patriotism.
Fatalist Margaret, their senior by 20 years, has one enlisted son and one arrested for protesting. Marta, a German-born Canadian citizen, becomes a target of harassment and suspicion in her own community while her senile, Nazi-sympathizing father idles in prison growing steadily crazier.
This bittersweet drama well exemplifies the isolation & loss of those left behind, against scenes of air raid drills, Red Cross activities, dark merriment & leg-painting parties.
I don't recommend this play merely for reading, as the emotional gravity and singing-rehearsal scenes would not be adequately captured, but it's worthwhile and interesting hour-&-a-half when protrayed by a talented cast.
(There are also a number of affecting monologues--most notably Marta's--suitable for actresses who want something slightly obscure to audition with.)

Waiting for the Parade is an excellent peice of Canadian literature. From an actor's point of view, the characters are believable and it is easy to grow to care for them as the play progresses. It is also an amazing resource for any female looking for good monologues!

About the Author

Sammy G. Shina, Ph.D., P.E., is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and former Director of the Electronics Manufacturing Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He is an international consultant, trainer, and seminar provider on project management, Six Sigma applications, technology supply chains, collaborative engineering, product design and development, and electronics manufacturing and automation, and has also worked extensively as an expert witness on issues of patent infringements of electronic products and systems. Dr. Shina spent more than 20 years developing new products and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies for several technology companies, including Hewlett Packard and RCA. He received S.B. degrees in electrical engineering and industrial management from MIT, a S.M. degree in computer science from WPI, and a Sc.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Tufts University.

Well Rounded Project Management Reference for Global Environment

This book pulls together critical elements of Engineering Project Management that go well beyond just tools and techniques generally associated with project management. There is considerable effort made to draw distinctions between industries that can afford longer development cycles with more captive manufacturing versus many of todays high tech industries where time to market is critical and a companies supply chain many be highly integrated into the development cycle. The author does a great job discussing those differences and how those differences influence the product development cycle with the use of real world case studies. I particularly appreciated the author dedicating chapters to topics around organizational behavior topics, communication, and leadership. These topics represent a significant challenge to a project manager trying to organize across a global organization where Engineering and manufacturing resources are spread out globally. I am a manager in global high tech organization and I highly recommend the book as a well-rounded project management reference.

As a manager of an engineer group in pharmaceutical company, I highly recommend this book. The author provided practical real-world cases studies, events, and activities that emphasize the importance of communication, risk assessment, cost and teamwork in managing engineering projects. The book covers developmental components and managing tools essential to successfully execute projects in today’s worldwide market. The book is well-organized and condenses a lot of good information under 500 pages, wisely balancing the details of a technical textbook and light reading of a quick reference guide. The chapter on communications is an added bonus that describes skills, tools, and methods that are essential for the planning and execution of a project, usually overlooked when dealing with interdisciplinary and multicultural global teams. The book is aimed to help new and experienced program managers.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I found it imminently readable and filled with relevant material. The author has addressed, explained, and demonstrated the latest tools and techniques, and he has directly addressed typical project pitfalls. Whether one is engaged in product development or any large scale project the methods are critical and current.
The book is well organized, and the topics are grouped in clear logical categories. The book begins with the historical perspective detailing the changes and developments that have happened over the last 40 years. With this background the author begins to explore and explain the individual tools. This structure is helpful in the initial reading and is critical when used as reference book. Thus it can be readily used as a “how to book”, and covers all topics from project initiation through completion are covered.
In addition there is a good use of case studies which not only show the implementation of the tools and also show the comprehensive nature of the project and the project manager’s role.
Key helpful points are:
1. A strong Bibliography provides additional reference material.
2. Full list and explanation of Project tools (management and engineering)
3. Clear and concise review of relevant financial models

About the Author
Forrest Baird has taught at Whitworth since 1978. In addition to teaching a variety of courses in philosophy, most summers he teaches for Fuller Theological Seminary in extension programs throughout the West. Dr. Baird has a B.A. from Westmont, an M.Div. From Fuller, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Baird's most recent scholarly work has been editing the six-volume Philosophic Classics series. His other works include editing the book, Human Thought and Action: Readings in Western Intellectual History, and co-authoring (with Jack Rogers) Introduction to Philosophy: A Case Study Approach.

Excellent Introduction to Philosophy Text

If you teach Introduction to Philosophy using a historical approach, this is the text I recommend. I used "The Philosophic Classics 2nd edition, From Plato to Nietzsche" for my classes and was looking for a text with the same basic works with some more contemporary materials. I find the updated 3rd edition, "From Plato to Derrida" the perfect solution. Instead of having to look through more textbooks for the right stuff, this is it.

A pretty good anthology

"From Plato to Derrida" provides portions of a significant number of the writings of the major philosophers past and present in one large volume. While one might quibble here and there with why a particular philosopher is represented and another is not, or why a certain portion of a philosophical work is included at the expense of another section of that same work, for the most part the truly crucial texts in the history of philosophy are found in this volume. In addition, the editor provides a helpful introduction to the writings of each philosopher whose works have been anthologized. As such, it would be an excellent primary-source text for a history of philosophy class. I would not recommend it for the typical introduction to philosophy class, since many of the selections require some prior familiarity with the issues of philosophy to really understand adequately.

Some will also regard the fact that the editor has chosen to present various "selections" from longer works as a drawback, since this procedure inevitably leaves out certain arguments that may be crucial to understanding the philosopher's overall thesis. However, it is hard to see how this can be avoided in an anthology of this sort.

All in all, I would recommend "From Plato to Derrida" as a pretty good anthology at a relatively affordable price.

I just love the DK books with the photos and information

I usually love the DK books. I am retiring in a couple months and will be taking lots of trips arond the US and the world. I purchased this book because I was looking for things to do in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. They have some information but are not organized as good as the California or Germany book. I just didn't see much to do. No walking tours, no driving tours, a little disappointed in this book because I had just good luck with other DK books. It might be better for other states and locations. I hope so.
