A Slim but Enjoyable Reference

This was the first volume I purchased of the series, and it helped convince me I wanted the others. The text is pleasant, factual, and readable, covering the development history and most of the variations. Many of the photos can be found reprinted in all the standard books on the Fw 190. I bought it mainly for the illustrations by Rikyu Watanabe, and they're excellent.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for profile art, but if I am, I don't think I'm alone. Profiles of machinery seem to strike a primal chord in some people, somehow; it can't be genetic, but there's something to them that grabs me. And when it comes to profile art, Rikyu Watanabe -- himself a former WWII flier for Japan -- stands with the best of his time, or even today.

These days, it's fairly easy to produce a nice profile. People do it all the time; there are websites and forums with tutorials. You can download line art and get started with Photoshop. But this book was published in 1980 -- hard to believe that's 30 years ago! -- and back then you had to do it the hard way, on paper.

Watanabe did it, and he excelled. This volume has a little less in the full-color profile department than some. The big one is an Fw 190A-4, printed on a three-page-wide foldout. There are two-page foldouts of an Fw 190A-5, and Fw 190D-9, and the Ta 152-H1. The rest is line drawings, including nice cutaways of both the final A-series, the A-8, and the ultimate Fw fighter, the Ta 152H-1. A cutaway of the BMW 801 radial engine and the cockpit diagram are nice, though a little simple by modern standards.

Of the other line drawings, the best are the four-views (top and bottom, front and back) of the A-8 in 1/46 scale, and the five-views (top and bottom, front and back, and port side profile, in 1/56 scale) of the D-9 and Ta 152H. These are supplemented by a number of line drawn profiles in 1/42 scale.

In summary, while it has good data, that's nothing you can't find elsewhere -- or even free, on the web, now. This book is about the art, and I think it's well worth the relatively low used price.

Your launching pad into the world of stock options

I was in the middle of writing my own book on retirement investing, which I have now finished. During that process I read many different books to get a well-around education on the subject. One area that always fascinated me - but seemed overwhelming - was the arena of stock options. I read the Futures and Options for Dummies book, only to then become more confused. I kinda gave up on the subject until I stumbled upon Michael Sincere's book in the store.

Don't let the size of the book fool you. The author packs quite a lot of information into these 221 pages. He explains the world of stock options in a very easy-to-understand format. Michael debunks many myths about options and shows you that while some types of options are highly risky, some are not.

This book is the launching pad to get you started in the world of stock options. You will eventually need to read more if you wish to purchase or sell options, but this book becomes your foundation. The nice thing about this book is that you will quickly learn whether or not options are right for you. Personally, I do not want to participate in options. However, I was able to make an informed decision based on the knowledge found in this book. I am still glad I read the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about stock options.

Great style, poor contents

Most people who are familiar with stocks and have never traded options before tend to treat options like stocks. The main strategies exposed by this book are the naked purchasing and selling of options with no spread, which are the very ones that a beginner will try to use (since they seem similar to stock trading) but should not. The only exception, the covered call strategy, has a low risk but also a very low return too and doesn't protect the investor against a major contrary market movement.

One can't deny that the author's intentions seem to be the best possible. He has a friendly manner and tries to motivate the reader all the time. The writing is very pleasant. But, unfortunately, style and intentions are not substitute for a poor treatment of a subject matter.

Armed with the information from this book, the beginner will hopefully find that some key knowledge is missing. For example, the author's explanation on how to adjust a naked call that didn't go well pales in comparison with the outstanding treatment and alternatives presented by McMillan in "Options as a Strategic Investment" on the chapter on the naked purchasing of calls.

For a much better treatment and introduction than this book, try "Get Rich with Options" by Lowell. Its title could be improved, but its contents are just superb. Any comparison with this book under review is simply unfair.

As Einstein once said, "make it simple but not too simple."

For every level investor

I read Sincere's first edition of this book years ago - and never bothered much with options, Certainly not the more advanced strategies. As I readdressed options recently, it became clear that this new edition was mandatory. Things change in the investment world - especially electronic trades - very rapidly.

Sincere's style of writing is clear, concise and very easy to read and follow. Terminology is explained in simple terms - he does a good job of assuring the reader that one will not get boggled in technical terms. As he says ... one doesn't need to understand a combustable engine to drive a car.

Sincere develops the chapters very well, progressing from topic to topic in an understandable and fluid manner.

As he suggests, one must be familiar with stocks, the market, and trading in general, before reading this book. There are many stock market and investment books available as primers, including one by the same author. Read and know investing before you start this book.

Understanding Options is a primer for the beginning option investor, as refresher for the more experienced, and covers very technical and advanced strategies for the seasoned investor.

My first edition - being in book form - is highlighted and dog eared. This edition I bought electronic - easy to read and many links are included which make it nicer to move within the volume to various topics. Of course it can still be 'page marked' and sections saved and highlighted for rereads.

I'm so bad at drawing but I can color! So this coloring book is perfect for me. Every page is filled with such chic illustrations - it's even great if you want to just outline to drawings to kind of learn how to sketch! I'm 30 and I totally enjoy this coloring book- i bought two so I could also give one to my niece. It's the perfect gift for a child or adult! If you have a daughter or niece, think of this as the perfect "mommy and me" activity! Highly recommend this stylish activity.

Love this coloring book. Love that it's different from a lot of the adult coloring books out there. Love that it's one sided and allows me to color with pencils and markers. I would definitely recommend this coloring books to anyone who colors to relieve stress or just for fun.

About the Author
Vesna Goldsworthy is a Serbian poet and writer living in London. She is author of three books: Inventing Ruritania; a memoir of her childhood in Yugoslavia, Chernobyl Strawberries, which was published to great acclaim in 2005 by Atlantic; and the Crashaw Prize-winning poetry collection, The Angel of Salonika (2011), greeted by the Nobel laureate J.M. Coetzee as "a welcome new voice in English poetry", and one of The Times Poetry Books of the Year.

A love story about books

Gorsky is a playful reimagining of The Great Gatsby set in contemporary London, where the merely very rich are gradually being superseded by the super-rich. The narrator is Nikola Kimovic, a Serbian exile and bibliophile working in a dowdy, unprofitable bookshop. Both the shop and his customers are propped up precariously and provisionally by old money.

Gorsky comes into his life, a wealthy Russian oligarch who made his money in mysterious circumstances. He wants to create the perfect library for his new Chelsea home. He offers Nikola an infinite budget to complete the task, along with temporary access to the wealth and glamour of his world. Nikola soon realises that the library is part of Gorsky's plan to win Natalia, a married Russian who he is not a little infatuated with himself.

Nikola is a wonderful character. I love his voice - his too-precise grammar, his dry observations, his melancholic humour. He is both outsider and intimate observer. He isolates himself, in a temporary home, aloof from the Serbian ex-pat community. Even his doctorate is on an unfashionable English author. However, his education, history and linguistic background mean he can communicate across the chasm of economic difference with Gorsky, Natalia and the cosmopolitan clique that surrounds them.

The plot isn't the most interesting thing about this book, but then that is true of Gatsby as well. It is a great satire on the bizarre world of the super-rich, showing how lives and cities and whole cultures bend to accommodate wealth, but still some things cannot be owned. It is also a love story about books.

An �migr� from Serbia, he has lived an anonymous life working for pennies in a back-street Chelsea bookshop for several unremarkable years. But when a Russian plutocrat of astonishing wealth comes into his orbit, life takes a turn for the extraordinary.

This is a terrific book, small yet perfectly formed. Vesna Goldsworthy has a wickedly witty turn of phrase and she knows not to overplay her hand. She labours neither her jokes nor her drama. Indeed, she often has her narrator walk away from the scenes of highest tension. Her characters (some of them recognisable) have layers of depth and they are convincingly developed. She is subtle with her satire but can deliver the killer thrust when necessary. Highly recommended.
