Thanks for the Magical Adventure with Anja

Even though it's a gorgeous October day and we just jumped in a big pile of leaves, I'll confess, I'm getting excited for Christmas and a beautiful snowfall after reading The Reindeer Wish by Lori Evert. Anja (the sweet little imaginative girl from The Christmas Wish and The Tiny Wish) takes us on another magical adventure in the woods far far away where she discovers a lost baby reindeer. My favorite part of the book was when the reindeer went to school. The pictures of Anja (taken by her father Per Breiehagen, Lori's husband) are amazing! It's so easy to imagine being one with nature while reading this book. Last Christmas we were introduced to Anja and her wilderness friends. We're so excited to continue this journey with her as she helps prepare one of Santa's reindeer.

Great Book for Christmas Eve reading.

I buy a Christmas book each year for my grands. Last year it was the first book the wish. My heritage is from the Nordic countries so it is great to great to the little one's on Christmas eve. It always gives the children something to think about after and keeps that special feeling of magic in there heart.

Foolish- i waited too long to buy this

This is a very well thought out reference aid. First the size makes this invaluable to anyone studying anatomy. It's inconvenient to lug around those heavy heavy texts, and this way you can study and memorize the diagrams wherever you are. Anatomy takes a lot of time in memory and repetition in looking at diagrams.

It's printed on waxy sturdy paper so it will take a beating.
It's well organized & color coded into systems, much the way your textbook probably is.

And the diagrams are beautifully illustrated- they tend to match the quality found in standard anatomy texts (I used Martini's text).
the print can get small, especially in the crowded muscles section, but it's clearly labelled. Invaluable purchase and will be useful in your future clinical practice.
Especially now it's on sale, do buy one!

About the Author
Fred Mandilk holds a Masters degree in Sociology with emphasis on behaviours and deviancy, from the California State University, Los Angeles. He worked in law enforcement for four years and was a high school teacher for over ten years. The two authors have trained German Shepherds fir over 35 police departments as well as private citizens. They trained and retested the dogs several times a year. Each dog they trained was found a placement, be it police, military or private home, was proficient in tracking, obedience and protection and some advanced dogs learned drug arson and explosive searching work. Marv Gangloff started his dog training business over thirty years ago while an active police dog handler and he imports promising dogs from several countries in Europe. The two authors have trained German Shepherds fir over 35 police departments as well as private citizens. They trained and retested the dogs several times a year. Overall good book

When reading this book's title, one believes they are buying a book solely on protection. Negative. This book also covers tracking and obedience training. This is fine, however, much of the techniques of the training are just an overview and are not really detailed. Many questions that may arise during training are left unanswered in this very brief book. It basically is a book on the Schutzhund sport, without it coming out and saying it outright. Overall, the book is a worthy addition for Schutzhund enthusiasts though would probably not provide any new information to the experienced Schutzhund trainer or those people well read on any of the three phases of Schutzhund.

It's about the working dog's mind and your relationship with the dog

I found this book insightful because it does not talk about how to mindlessly train dogs. Most other books list the step-by-step process but miss the logic or thinking about the relationship with working dogs. This book explains what this relationship is about.

Mandilk and Gangloff has written a short, but not simple, book on handling working dogs. The focus is on the emotional and intelligence aspect of the working dog owner/handler relationship.

This is as it should be because most failures of 'sport' or working dog during trials or even day-to-day living is here. No amount of good genetics, expensive equipment or vet fees will create a bond between working dog and handler, unless this relationship is understood.

The book cover says as much: "... stress the importance of correct attitude and commitment on the part of the owner/handler and explain the role in forming a working partnership between handler and dog."

Earlier reviews must have missed this because they, probably, were looking for the mechanics or step-by-step instructions on schuzthund or other sports. This is not the book for that. Instead, if after reading Balabanov, Barwig and Hilliard, etc, you want a coherent philosophy or technique with working dogs, this is the book for it.

My only complain is that Mandilk and Gangloff are terse, concise and to the point. I liked it so much, I wish there was a Chapter 6!

We wrote this brief and to the point book for one reason: to quickly provide information for both the inexperienced and wrongfully taught handler of the working dog. There are three additional sub-themes. The working dog is a family member; however, it is not a "sport" dog. Defense of a family, or handler, must never be considered sport, even in training. Secondly, the working dog is a full-time two-year-old child in the sense of time commitment. The handler must not only care for physical needs, but must maintain training routines, (obedience, tracking and grip work). The goal is not robotic responses, but team interaction that incorporates work, fun and mutual respect. To repeat, this is also a goal of protection work. The work shows how to incorporate positive training aspects, and points out abusive "techniques" and their results: a dog that can't be depended upon in the multiple settings of family life. The work is an easy read and useful for owners of non-protection breeds as well.

Ce n'est pas le meilleur livre que j'ai lu d'Anna Gavalda, mais il faut le lire parce qu'il y a beaucoup de sentiment. Apr�s j'avais plus envie encore d'avoir des fr�res ou des saeurs. C'est l'histoire du Garant, une jeune fille et ses fr�res et saeurs: Lola, Simon et Vincent. Ils sont maintenant adultes. Comme tout le monde, eux aussi ont connu des exp�riences bonnes ou mauvaises. Un apr�s-midi, comme quand ils �taient jeunes, ils prennent une pause de toutes leurs affaires quotidiennes pour rester ensemble. Pour revivre un peu de leur jeunesse pour se rappeler comme cela a �t� et qu'ils vont rester unis pour l'�ternit�.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Richard Condon (1915-1996) is a political novelist from New York who wrote over 26 satirical thrillers throughout a prolific career—dealing with themes of political corruption, greed, and abuse of power. Before his career as a novelist, Condon served in the US Merchant Marines and later became a Hollywood publicist, agent, and advertising writer.

Condon’s best-selling works include The Manchurian Candidate and the Prizzi series, dealing with the life of a crime family in New York. The Manchurian Candidate was made into a movie twice, once in 1962 and again in 2004. The 1962 movie starred Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role.

A Boy and His Mother

Louis Menard points out his excellent introduction to The Manchurian Candidate that Richard Condon's novel is about control, conditioning, and manipulation. Raymond Shaw and his fellow G.I.s are captured in Korea, undergo "brainwashing", and are released believing that they, through the heroism of Sergeant Shaw, have been saved from a company of enemy infantry. The encounter never took place, of course, but that's the story that will win Raymond the Medal of Honor. However, Raymond has been conditioned to be the ulimate assassin. Meanwhile Major Marco, Raymond's commanding officer in Korea, has been having terrible nightmares in which he sees Raymond killing two members of their patrol in cold blood. He also sees himself and his patrol on a stage facing some high ranking Soviet and Chinese officals. The staggering nightmares cause Marco to start wondering if he, Raymond, and the others have been brainwashed. This leads him on a frantic investigation to discover the truth before something disastrous happens. Raymond can't recall any of what Marco has been dreaming about. He has been completely conditioned twice over -- once by the Pavlovian doctors and also by his mother, Mrs. Iselin, probably the most evil villainess in all of literature. She is the embodiment of Control and she savages anyone who gets in the way of her plans for domination. The Manchurian Candidate is very fine writing. Condon's style is eccentric but it is perfect for the bizarre, paranoid tale he is telling. His portrayal of Raymond as a damned soul is moving. Raymond, who is cursed with "crushing contemptuousness", is "impossible to like", but we can't help but be sympathetic to this young man who was never allowed to be himself, who was never allowed to feel. Mrs. Iselin is over-the-top, but who cares? She sends chills down your spine while providing some wicked humor. The Manchurian Candidate is a Freudian cocktail that will give you lots to chew on.

Highly original, chilling political thriller

This is a great DVD with many excellent bonus features, including the Director's commentary that adds so much to the understanding of how the film was made. The film was shot primarily with wide angle lenses which heightens the effect of some very frightening screens. For example is there anything more incredible than the scene where the captured, brainwashed prisoners believe they are attending a ladies' garden party, while actually on stage as human guinea pigs in a meeting of communist cadres. Just an amazing juxtaposition of images! The storyline is well developed and never loses the taut feeling of suspense from start to finish. Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, and Angela Lansbury are particularly fine in their roles. If there is only one criticism, it is that Harvey lapses at times into his original British accent, which is disconcerting. But given the power of his performance in this role, this is a minor detail that can easily be overlooked. The film is shot in black and white, which is far better suited to its cold war images. Just puzzled why MGM issued the cover for this DVD in color? Anyway, highly recommend this DVD!

Had to read this book for a college class. ... This is an awesome book. It's a military psychological thriller in which some POW US soldiers are brainwashed and sent home; all programmed to do damage to the government when they get there. Given that the men are war heroes, it isn't hard for them to get a foot in the door where they can really wreak havoc. The plot twists around in ways too creepy to be believed, yet too familiar to be completely discounted...heh heh heh. It's definitely readable as a thriller, but does good double duty as a quasi sci-fi conspiracy novel, not to mention the informed and responsible portrayal of US military intelligence. I wanted to call it Kurt Vonnegut meets Tom Clancy, but that's not doing it justice. Maybe it's out-of-print because it couldn't find a niche. Or maybe THEY don't want you to read it.
