An Honest Story

I recently read all the the reviews of the Trapp Family Singers, which I have also read. One of the recurring criticisms of the book is that it paints a dishonest picture or too rosy a picture of Maria and the Trapp family (This book was written in the late 40's or early 50's.) Several reviewers mentioned the recent story on the TV series, Biography, which told what they felt was the "real story." Well, it's a shame that the book, Maria, is now out of print. This book was published in 1972, and Maria is much more honest about her sad childhood, and she does not leave out many unflattering pictures of herself. She also tells about her time of atheism and how she came back to her faith. One part of the book details how "blazing mad" she was with God after she married the Baron, and felt that God had "rejected" her as His bride. In another part she details her deep guilt after her husband's death, since she felt that in many ways she had made his life miserable by her "terrible temper"--she makes it clear that the Captain was the quiet and gentle parent in the family, and also discusses how much she disliked the fact that the "Sound of Music" portrayed him as a stern disciplinarian. Maria also tells how much trouble she had letting go of "control" of the family business and how she feels she made mistakes as both a wife, mother, and grandmother. So, you see, Biography's "expose" really had to come, at least somewhat, from Maria's own words. The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that, at times, the writing is a little hard follow in that it jumps around. However, I did get the feeling that Maria was talking and reminiscing, which is part of the reason for the "jumpiness." Maria's earlier book was written in a different time when people didn't reveal as much about themselves as they do now. The later book is not a "tell all" but strikes a good balance in that I think Maria genuinely wanted to let people see her strengths and weaknesses and what God could do with such a flawed and imperfect individual.

Delightful Story

We have loved the Von Trapp Family for years and read about parts of their life, knowing Maria had a great part in their story. I heard the family sing in the '50's at a small college here in my neighborhood and remember their quaint costumes and unusual songs. Wanting to read more of Maria's story I searced on Amazzon. What a joy to read the book. It came in great condition in a shorter length of time than expected. It's a story for everybody and you will be surprised at Maria's beginnings as a school girl! What a hoot! And what a delight to read "the rest of the story!"

Maria von Trapp: A Portrait in Self-Contradiction

How do you know when Maria von Trapp is not lying? It is simple. When her lips are not moving. In her first book, written in 1949, she tells of the time she met the Captain and the children for the first time. She describes a scene that is very similar to the scene in the play and in the movie. She even mentions that the Captain used a whistle to call the children.
In this book, she states that the Captain was not at home when she arrived, and that Baroness Matilda introduced the children to her.
Hoping that no one will notice her contradictory lies, she blames the producers of the play for (falsely) portraying her husband as a stern disciplinarian. Well, give me a break. It was her 1949 book, telling of the whistle, that gave them the idea. There is also a chapter in the 1949 book about "the baron doesn't want it."
So, she invents the story, and then blames us for believing it.

About the Author
His Excellency Ali Ibrahim Al-Naimi was Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from 1995 to May 2016. He is a member of the Cabinet of the Council of Ministers and the Supreme Economic Council. From 1995 until 2015, he was Chairman of the Kingdom's national oil company, Saudi Aramco. He is also Chairman of the Saudi Geological Society and of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. He is routinely named on international power lists, including the Time World's 100 Most Influential People and The Times's GulfPower25.

Fascinating memoir from Saudi oil chief, whose voice moved markets

Fascinating memoir from one who could arguably be called the world's oil chief for over two decades. The book takes a look at Al-Naimi's life from poor being born into a poor nomadic Bedouin family in the 1930s, to serving as the CEO of Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company, to serving as Saudi Arabia's powerful oil minister from 1995 to May 2016.

Al-Naimi's autobiography is fascinating to read from both a political and economic perspective, particularly his now some-what questionable decision to let Saudi Arabia ramp up oil production at all costs in Nov. 2014 just as oil markets were being saturated. The result of that decision has been to help put in place one of the worst oil market crashes in a generation, in spite of the fact that U.S. shale oil production actually started the over-supply quandary.

A fascinating passage from his book comes when Al-Naimi writes that one of his aides asked him in November 2014, what was the chance of leading non-OPEC countries Russia, Mexico, Kazakhstan and Norway cutting oil production.

"I held up my right hand and made the sign for zero," he writes.

At the time of his books release, the prospect of an oil production cut still looks pretty dismal.

A helpful introduction to C#

For its size, this book does an excellent job of introducing the novice to programming in C#.NET. I recommend it as a starting text and reference book on the subject.

Awful book...save your money.

I rarely write reviews, but it was painful to read this book. Concepts are not well articulated at all.

Pg 102:
"Static classes can contain only static members, but those members are not automatically static. You must explicitly include the static modifier, however, you can declare any static member as public, private, or internal"

and then immediately beneath it, with the word CAUTION as a blurb of something extra valuable:

"THE" dictionary for study abroad in Spain

Okay, I'm an American (estadounidense) student about to complete week six of a summer immersion program here in Bilbao, Spain (en el Pa�s Vasco). Since I've been here, I think I've seen most of the current Spanish/English dictionaries available and in use by 'English-first' speakers. For my money, this "Compact Oxford Spanish Dictionary" is the one dictionary I would recommend for study-abroad in Spain. I can't say how one would fare with it in Central or South America, but it is 'spot-on' for Spain. The dictionary I brought with me, a $17 copy of a Defense Language Institute version once issued by DOD, went right in the trash before week one was complete (actually I abandoned it in a random bookcase at the institute). Our little class has one well-worn copy of this great reference tool and it is the one dictionary all of us 'English-first' speakers prefer. Notice the title says "compact" and not "pocket." This is a full-size 8" x 5" book with a bit of heft to it. Don't get it if you're trying to save on size and weight. And even though most folks here have a dictionary 'app' on their phone, they will quickly resort to this book if it is nearby. It's faster and easier. I prefer a book to an 'app' anyway, but I'm old school. So quick re-cap, for study-abroad in Spain, two thumbs-up.

the best dictionary for learning

I recommend this dictionary to individuals whom I am tutoring in Spanish because it tells you when a word is vulgar or only used in one particular country or region. Most dictionaries, incredibly, do not include this sort of information and the student is likely to say something that isn't generally understood outside one particular country, or even really offensive.

As an example, "catch" is basically never a vulgar word in English, but the first entry in a Spanish-English dictionary is always listed as... [I'm not even going to spell it out, but it begins with a "c"] which also means... [um, again I'm not going to spell it out but it begins with "F"]. You must be fairly fluent to know when you can actually say that particular word beginning in "C" without it being an instant joke. The Oxford dictionary helps you out with a notation "vulg" (vulgar) for that "C" word, which clues you in that you'd be better off choosing one of the words listed next in the entry, like agarrar, detener, etc.

The Oxford dictionaries and Larousse dictionaries are the only ones that reliably provide this sort of information, in a clear, easy-to-understand format. Of those two, Oxford is the only one as far as I know who makes a compact (paperback) version under $15.

AWFUL QUALITY!!!!!

I never leave reviews but I am so fed up with this dictionary I had to say something! As a department, we bought 5 classroom sets (over 100 dictionaries) for our Spanish classes to keep on the tables for the students. Our last dictionaries, Mirriam-Websters, had lasted us about 6 years but were becoming a little haggard. The Oxford dictionaries didn't even last 5 months!!!!! Every single one has split in half. The binding is cheap and ineffective. They are not useable, as all the pages have fallen out all over the room. I spend every period picking up papers from the dictionaries and recycling them. I know it's not my students, because they were able to use the Mirriam-Webster dictionaries for over 6 years! I am so angry we have spent all our money on these. They are now more of a head ache than a support in the classroom.
