Satya Komatineni has been programming for more than 20 years in the IT and Web space. He has had the opportunity to work with Assembly, C, C++, Rexx, Java, C#, Lisp, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, SVG, relational databases, object databases and related technologies. He has published more than 30 articles touching many of these areas, both in print and online. He has been a frequent speaker at O'Reilly Open Source Conference, speaking on innovations around Java and Web. Satya has done a considerable amount of original work in creating Aspire, a comprehensive open-source Java-based web framework, and has explored personal web productivity and collaboration tools through his open-source work for KnowledgeFolders.com. Satya holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Andhra University, India. So Close! But left out some crucial components

So I ordered this having been impressed with the Pro series before. They cover in depth a lot of different subjects, from fragments, to visualizations, to background asynctasks, etc. However, they say explicitly that they don't deal with Loaders or really cursors. Now, cursors I can understand, but to not include Loaders in this book is a gross oversight. There are other things that this book leaves out, but the biggest component which is something, with today's data centric world, is really necessary. I would recommend waiting for a different book if you are looking for help in this area. However, this book does do well with a lot of other components so it is still worth while. That is why I gave it a 3 out of 5. It is good, but could be great.

I purchased this book in the hopes it would provide more detail into the Android API, since a lot of Android books only cover the very basics. Unfortunately, the writing is very poor and difficult to follow. The copy editor and proofreader (if there was one) should have done a much better job. There are numerous typos and formatting errors. A few of the chapters are decent, but overall I recommend you skip this one. Despite its large size, there are actually a few topics covered in the previous version (Pro Android 3), but not in this version. Also, the back of the book advertises that it covers OpenGL, which is not the case.

a very nice comprehensive book (too comprehensive?)

I have this and a previous edition (Pro Android 3) of the book. That one is an excellent book with excellent reviews. This one (4th edition) is a necessary and nice upgrade since the animation API has changed so much, and this version covers that well. Also, the contacts API has changed. There are other changes to the API that this edition covers. Also, they've added a whole new chapter on the important asynctask related APIs. This edition offers a full comprehensive coverage on fragments and action bar.

Overall, this book series seems to be getting better as the authors research the new APIs and make update. Yes, there is an error where back cover states it contains OpenGL coverage. But the publisher and authors have since then posted that chapter online.

Actually a very good book. But I personally like shorter books (can't read so much). So dinged one start for the sheer bulk - 1000+ page! :-) I wish the authors would come up with a condensed version as well.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, rogue sociologist Venkatesh infiltrated the world of tenant and gang life in Chicago's Robert Taylor Home projects. He found a complex system of compromises and subsistence that makes life (barely) manageable. Venkatesh excellently illustrates the resourcefulness of impoverished communities in contrast to a society that has virtually abandoned them. He also reveals the symbiotic relationship between the community and the gangs that helps sustain each. Reg Rogers reads with great emphasis and rhythm. His lilting, cadence and vocal characterization of tenants is enjoyable. Rogers's first-person narrative establishes a deep intimacy with the reader. Venkatesh reads the final chapter, but he lacks the subtly and nuance that Rogers projects throughout his reading. The insubstantial author interview on the last disc mostly covers material already discussed in the book.

Adult/High School—As a young graduate student fresh off an extended stint following the Grateful Dead, Venkatesh began studying urban poverty. With a combination of an ethnographer's curiosity about another culture and some massive na�vet�, he gathered firsthand knowledge of the intricacies of Chicago's Robert Taylor projects. Early on, he met a megalomaniac gang leader known here as J.T., who became his mentor. Venkatesh observed and learned how the crack game works, and how many have their fingers in the pie and need life to remain the way it is. He observed violence, corruption, near homelessness, good cops, bad cops, and a lot of neglect and politics-as-usual. He made errors in judgment—it took a long time for his street smarts to catch up to his book smarts—but he tells the story in such a way as to allow readers to figure out his missteps as he did. Finally, as the projects began to come down, Venkatesh was able to demonstrate how something that seems positive is not actually good for everyone. The first line in his preface, "I woke up at about 7:30 a.m. in a crack den," reflects the prurient side of his studies, the first chapter title, "How does it feel to be black and poor?" reflects the theoretical side, and both work together in this well-rounded portrayal.—Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

It was a wonderful insight into the reality of living in Chicago from the late 80's to mid 90's. Is the dialogue a little unrealistic? Sure, but in all honesty, I would have grown tired of reading slang, so I'm very grateful that he avoided that route. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the floating city.
I'm not a terribly slow reader and I'm not the quickest either, but the chapters are long, so be ready for a marathon of reading. It is well worth it though. I feel like I learned a lot about my fellow man and about a class that works hard to remain a family.

This one is way better than Between the World and Me. Or you can say is the oppsite. The language is plain but appealing, little emotional expressions but strikes directly into your heart.

I also think the reason why this book is especially touching is because it's not only talk about the life of black gang members and those who once lived in Robert Talyor Homes, it also reflected the life of all poors, no matter he/she is living in Rio or Hongkong. And even more, you will find yourself in this book----you gotta face the ups and downs, meanwhile dealing with those rights and wrongs.

Really good book

I was required to read this book for class but ended up really enjoying it. It reads as a fictional book however it is very true, as well as eye opening. Not only was this interesting to read but it was also an easy ready. It is about a sociologist who goes to experience the slums and gang life first hand to learn about it. It is so bizarre to read about his exeperience from the inside.

Its fun.

I am suprised to see this book only translated into english, i have this book for 15 years in my library in my language (translated from original russian to turkish) At first i bought only it was cheap (less than a few bucks) and didnt read much (and didnt appreciated) but now i am considering this book to be fun. There are lots of instructional books around, many tactic and middlegame book, not mentioning opening books. I can't say something about its instructive value (though games definetely have some quality) you always learn something when examining some good games. But its definetive positive side is its fun. You wil definetely spare some hours to chess every week if you have this book.

Great book on a new software topic

If you write code for fun or for a livelihood, I recommend you check this book out.

According to the book, Feedback Control is a topic well known to mechanical engineers, but not so much in the software industry. Feedback Control is about making smarter systems that can cope with dynamic environments. Many knobs that developers build into configuration can actually be automated with feedback loops.

Examples given early in the book:
* A Cache by tracking hit rate and changing the cache size
* A Server Farm by tracking request latency and changing number of deployed server nodes
* A Queueing System by tracking wait time and changing the number of workers
* A Graphics Library by tracking memory consumption and changing the output resolution

The book is well written. It starts out with practical examples and working code. It later introduces the deep theory and drops some math bombs. Don't worry, there is Python code for everything and you don't have to understand the math.

It gives solid advice, like don't blindly use Feedback Control for optimization; optimization needs a higher level strategy guiding the process.

Lastly, there are references for further reading, if you do want to work through more of the theory.

The term Enterprise is thrown about, don't let this scare you away :) This is a valuable book for many types of software problems. A couple I've brainstormed while reading:
* Controlling difficulty of a video game, to react to how skilled a player is
* Controlling aspects of an animation
* Controlling polling of APIs for fresh data
* Driving load testing to find different scaling points (errors, high latency, etc)

If you have a coding situation that smells even a little bit like a PID controller would help then you should get this book to provide good explanation of how dynamic control behaves in software. Good solid actionable info and clear presentation.

Feedback is the Organizing Principle for the Real-Time Economy

I want to say one word... Just one word.,, Are you listening? * Feedback.*

I couldn't resist using that line from the movie "The Graduate". Just as plastics became central to the industrial economy of the last century; feedback is becoming central to the real-time economy of this century. Effective use of information technology to enable companies to harness the power of feedback is the highest calling of the IT professional in this century and this economy. Companies that learn to harness feedback to guide their operations will be big winners in our real-time economy.

Success in the real-time economy is about continuous response to change even more so than it is about being efficient. Efficiency is an Industrial age concept. Continuous response to change (while remaining efficient enough) is what we need to succeed in this age. That means feedback and understanding how to use feedback to guide and manage IT operations moment to moment.

Mr. Janert presents the concepts of feedback in a clear and detailed manner. The IT professional who wants to specialize in the fine art and discipline of operating data centers in the real-time economy needs to understand feedback and how to apply it to run IT operations moment to moment as the real-time world unfolds. Janert presents specific examples of applying the principles of feedback to the tasks involved in running data centers. He illustrates his examples with samples of code and as you work through the code exercises, you get a clear understanding of how to apply these principles.

The only reason I don't give this book a five star rating is that I wanted it to go beyond IT operations and show how feedback can also be applied to business operations. The same principles of feedback that govern the spin up of more virtual server instances in a cloud data center also apply to the order picking activity in a warehouse. The same principles of feedback that apply to the allocation of DRAM and storage space in a dynamic and unpredictable operations environment also apply to the allocation of money in a financial portfolio or the scheduling of delivery vehicles on a road network. IT pros need to appreciate this larger picture because it provides context to understand how IT and business operations can use feedback to work together in the real-time world.

This book is for the devoted and highly skilled IT ops professional and for those who aspire to be highly skilled IT ops professionals. If I was a CIO or IT Ops Director running a data center of any size, I would strongly encourage all of my staff to read this book.

Great introduction to medieval history in the West

This is a great introduction to medieval history in Europe and the Near East. Rosenwein starts with the fall of the Roman Empire and takes us all the way to the start of the high middle ages. Along the way we get the meat of the dark ages - one of the most interesting periods in my book. This book is very short for such breadth. The pace is incredibly rapid yet the book never feels rushed. The brevity is an asset - the book is easy and quick to read. It actually lives in our bathroom (!) Yet the tone is scholarly and even handed.

There some very good content here. Focus is evenly split amongst Byzantine Greek, Islamic Arabia, North Africa & Al Andalus, and Europe. The most powerful insight Rosenwein gives us in that all these disparate cultures are the descendants of ancient Rome - each in their own unique but related ways. There are timelines and family trees with successions of kings. These listings are not comprehensive, but give you a good taste. The book is beautifully illustrated. This isn't the meal - but rather an exquisite appetizer. Recommended.

A very good introductory medieval text

This is a wonderful introductory medieval text. No introductory text can be all things to all people, but this one is still remarkable in its ability to address the most pressing issues. If Amazon allowed half stars I might have gone with 4 1/2 instead of 5, but it is closer to 5 stars than 4. The things that Rosenwein does VERY well include:

1) Chapter one is background on the Classical/Roman era to give students some perspective on the origin of the Middle Ages.

2) Inclusion of cultures beyond Western Europe is a huge plus. There is adequate coverage of events in Byzantium, the Islamic World, and later, of the Ottomans.

3) Includes excellent discussion of the art of the times. This includes the excellent, full page, high quality color pictures of relevent art and architecture.

4) A quality book overall. The maps are also often in full color, with a few in black in white.

5) A very readable academic style. The edge between being "unacademic" and being so scholarly as to be unaccessable is a fine one. Rosenwein sticks to it very well, seldom falling to either side.

There are, of course, areas of interest where I wish that she would go into more detail, but as other reviewers and commenters have noted, this IS an intro text, designed to be "short" and also it is aimed at the average undergrad who may not have a strong background in history. Professors constantly struggle with finding good quality books that students will actually read! A good professor will be able to adequately augment in the places where more depth is needed.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book for the classroom, and for anyone who is interested in a broad view of 1200 years of history, this is an enjoyable introduction, although if military/political history of only Western Europe (France, England, Germany, Italy) is your only interest, this may not be the book for you.

I appreciate this book more with each reading. It is good to start off with. As the author writes in the introduction, some people want a short history of the middle ages. After reading the book the first time, I wanted more, and so I read several other books. When I came back to review, I realize that every sentence is important. The author has done an amazing job of outlining the forest without getting tangled up in the trees.

Needs Proper Editing

The storyline was simplistic and sweet, but the numerous grammatical errors made it impossible for me to complete reading the book. I would suggest an editor who has a firm grasp on the English language provide proper editing services, and the author then re-release the book. At this point I would not recommend this book.

Wonderful story. Love the characters. Lots of drama. This is a story of a young woman in search of rebuilding her life after an accident that hurt her not only physically but emotionally. A trip to California changes her life. Read to find out how. Sad to say it still needs editing.

Slow book with a ludicrous plot line and a very bad ending

As many reviewers have already written, the plot is LUDICROUS and the tea scene at the end is absolutely MADDENING.

This book was slow and I was sort of shocked when the murder happened at about 50% of the book (I read it on my Kindle so I don't know page numbers.) I thought to myself "How are they going to fill up the rest of this book?" And I was spot on: this book could've ended at the 50% mark and I would've liked it more. On the plus side: it's an easy read that you can finish on a domestic flight.

How they are going to turn this into a movie is beyond me. No doubt, it will be a boring movie.

Basically, here's the book so you can save your money (there are no real spoilers):

0%: Meet Nora
5%: Start ludicrous plot line
10%: Meet a motley crew of annoying characters
25%: Tequila and cocaine
50%: Murder (an alcohol and drug-fueled murder? Ruh roh!)
60%: Nora can't remember what happened.
70%: Nora still can't remember what happened.
80%: "Oh why, oh why, can't I remember what happened?" asks Nora.
90%: Eureka, Nora remembers what happened!
95%: Nora's having tea with the murderer because killing someone sure makes me thirsty for some Earl Grey.
100%: Thank God this book is over.

A Mystery for Scooby Doo Fans

I have to admit up front that I was very disappointed in In a Dark, Dark Wood.

The story centers on Nora, a 26 year old crime fiction writer who is sometimes referred to by other characters as Lee, Leonora, or Leo. Nora is invited to a bachelorette weekend party to celebrate the marriage of Clare, a person she hasn't seen in a decade. The reunion is awkward (Clare is marrying Nora's old boyfriend) and the guests include various stereotypes: the mentally unhinged Flo, catty Tom, stressed out new mom Melanie, and sassy best friend Nina. Toss in lots of alcohol, a litttle cocaine, and plenty of bad feelings and you have the makings of a really unpleasant party. And then there's a murder which leaves Nora battered with amnesia trying to put her memories back together.

Touted as a mystery in the Agatha Christie mold the story plays out more like a Scooby-doo tale. The author drops conspicuous clues repetitively. Two characters who are of similar build wear identical clothing (Jinkies!) and there's a shotgun hanging on the wall loaded with blanks (Ruh-roh). There are other warning signs as well -- no phone service, mysterious footprints and a missing cell phone. The author lays out the clues in an heavy handed, overt manner.

The characters come across as fairly shallow and juvenile. There didn't seem to be anyone to root for -- not even the murder victim. The ending is quite obvious -- although not to Nora which reinforces her characterization as incredibly dim (especially for a crime fiction writer). I don't want to give out any spoilers, but the tea drinking conversation near the end of the book is ludicrous.

I can not recommend this book.
