[This text] has got almost everything that I want to teach an undergraduate student in the area of hospitality customer service management compressed in around 400 pages. … I have not yet found a real 'competitor' for this book. While there are so many books that deal with hospitality consumer behavior / marketing / management, none of them offer a 'real-life feel' like this book. About the Author
Robert C Ford (Ph.D. Arizona State) is currently a professor of management in the College of Business Administration (COBA) of the University of Central Florida (UCF) where he teaches management of service organizations. He joined UCF as the chairman of its hospitality department after serving as the head of management at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was UCF's COBA the Associate Dean for Graduate and External Programs for five years. Bob has authored or coauthored numerous publications currently focusing on service management in both top research and practitioner journals. He serves on several editorial boards including Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, British Journal of Management, Journal, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies and is the associate editor of the Journal of Service Management. He has also published several books including Managing the Guest Experience in Hospitality, Achieving Service Excellence, Managing Destination Marketing Organization and most recently The Fun Minute Manager. Bob has served the Southern Management Association (SMA) in every elective office including president. He has held important roles in other organizations as well. He was a founding member and later Chair of the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration and currently serves on the Destination Marketing Accreditation Commission. Bob has been recognized for his work by organizations he served including the Distinquished Service Award from AOM's MED, election to SMA Fellows, election as its dean and SMA Distinquished Service Award. In recognition of his service to hospitality education he was given the Paul Brown Award by the Florida Hotel and Lodging Association.

Michael C. Sturman is an Associate Professor at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, and is the Kenneth and Marjorie Blanchard Professor of Human Resources. There, he teaches undergraduate, graduate and executive education courses on human resource management, compensation, and cost-benefit analysis. His current research focuses on the prediction of individual job performance. He has published research articles in such journals as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology and Journal of Management. He has also published practitioner papers in the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Lodging Magazine, Lodging HR, A.A.H.O.A Hospitality, HR Com and the American Compensation Association Journal. Michael holds a Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. from Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, and is a Senior Professional of Human Resources as certified by the Society for Human Resource Management.

Cherrill P. Heaton (Ph.D.) recently retired as Professor of Organizational Communications from the University of North Florida where he taught organizational and business communications to students in the graduate business programs for thirty years. In addition, he taught short courses in effective business communication in numerous executive education programs. Besides serving as editor of Management by Objectives in Higher Education, he is the co-author of several articles on service management and four texts; Principles of Management: A Decision Making Approach; Organizational Theory, Achieving Service Excellence: Strategies for Health Care; and Managing the Guest Experience in Hospitality. He also served as managing editor for the Academy of Management Executive.

The Monsters Within

On Monsters takes you down a dark stair into the cellar of the human mind. A place where all that is horrible and inconceivably wicked in the universe scurries about in the shadows ready to leap out upon you from the darkness. Mankind's fascination with, and dread of, monsters is a part of the human experience that stretches back in the past as far as we are able to see. What these ideas are have changed and grown through the centuries in step with the growth of our understanding of the world and our place in it. To the ancients monsters were outside, outside of us and outside the world that the gods had made. Rapacious and insatiable it was up to the great heroes, Beowulf and St. George, to slay them. And to some extent this is still valid today. But by the time of the Greeks people had begun to realize that things were not that simple. There could be human monsters too, Medea serving her children for supper.

Dr. Asma undertakes to lead you through the entire conceptual history of monsters. A compendium of monsterology beginning with Alexander and his battle with monsters in India on up to the present, every type of monster is given its turn. As our understanding of monsters develops you can see the monsters evolving. The cyclops of the ancients, the witches of the medieval church, the physical mutants of science, the Frankenstein's monster and the werewolves of popular culture, the Hitler's, the John Wayne Gracie's and the monsters of our own psyche. What they are and how they are understood in today's world the understanding of monsters is not simple and has simple answers. Perhaps this is the lesson of the whole book for in the end the monster's are within us all. And if we are ever to control them it is here that they must be faced. This book will give you some fresh insights into some of the darker recesses of the human mind which in turn gives one a better understanding of how you can control them in your own life.

What is a Monster?

On Monsters: An Unnatural History of Our Worst Fears by Stephen Asma attempts to answer this question from a wide range of fascinating perspectives.

Asma begins with the origin of the word monster: "Monster derives from the Latin word monstrum, which in turn derives from the root monere (to warn). To be a monser is to be an omen." From there, Asma explores symbolic and literal monsters, the perception of monsters throughout history to the present day as well as their role in the future.

Asma's overall definition of what has been perceived as monsters is broad, encompassing mythological ones such as griffins and manticores to serial killers like John Wayne Gacy. Asma even delves into horror movies or "torture porn," such as Hostel.

The Loch Ness Monster is mentioned briefly a couple of times. Bigfoot doesn't make an appearance at all. This isn't that kind of book.

Instead, Asma explores all the facets and connotations of the monstrous:

-as archetypes
-Modern-day criminal monsters
-Future monsters
-literary monsters such as Grendel and Frankenstein's creature

In chronicling the role of monsters throughout history, Asma lists some idiotic, once widely-held beliefs. One of the more outrageous ones (at least from a modern-day, enlightened point of view) is that in the middle ages, it was thought that the following caused a mother to give birth to a monster [meaning a mutant or freak]:
Too great a quantity of seed
Too little quantity
The imagination
the narrowness or smallness of the womb
the indecent posture of the mother, as when, being pregnant, she has sat too long with her legs crossed, or pressed against her womb

Surprisingly, rather than assembling a menagerie of fearsome and fantastic creatures, Asma gathers human monstrosities, such as psychopaths. The demonization of "the other" in society (other races, religions, cultures), he argues, is a form of monster-making.

Given the many and varied examples of monsters throughout history, Asma concludes that there isn't "one compelling definition of monster"; however, most monsters share the same characteristics:

"Monsters cannot be reasoned with. Monsters are generally ugly and inspire horror. Monsters are unnatural. Monsters are overwhelmingly powerful. Monsters are evil. Monsters are misunderstood. Monsters cannot be understood...They reflect the fears of specific eras. But they also reflect more universal human anxieties and cognitive tendencies, the stuff that gives us human solidarity...."

Superior Psychocultural History

Asma's book is valuable from many perspectives, but especially so with regards to the psychology of "monsterology." His comments about Freud's theory of the Uncanny, the familiar-foreign dichotomy that evokes curiosity, trepidation and fear, is an example of Asma's observations about the ambiguous nature of terror. Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman scare us because they are like us but at the same time not us, a near-familiar limbo that confuses and disorients. not a thesaurus

The book is good as a dictionary. It has a few hundred entries and their synonyms. However, the book has no cross reference index of all the synonym terms and in turn their synonyms to qualify as a thesaurus. So I rate the book in the middle since half the title is missing. By the way, I am keeping the book since this is all I could find specificly on computer terms. I have not examined thesauruses of recent publication.

A Slim but Enjoyable Reference

This was the first volume I purchased of the series, and it helped convince me I wanted the others. The text is pleasant, factual, and readable, covering the development history and most of the variations. Many of the photos can be found reprinted in all the standard books on the Fw 190. I bought it mainly for the illustrations by Rikyu Watanabe, and they're excellent.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for profile art, but if I am, I don't think I'm alone. Profiles of machinery seem to strike a primal chord in some people, somehow; it can't be genetic, but there's something to them that grabs me. And when it comes to profile art, Rikyu Watanabe -- himself a former WWII flier for Japan -- stands with the best of his time, or even today.

These days, it's fairly easy to produce a nice profile. People do it all the time; there are websites and forums with tutorials. You can download line art and get started with Photoshop. But this book was published in 1980 -- hard to believe that's 30 years ago! -- and back then you had to do it the hard way, on paper.

Watanabe did it, and he excelled. This volume has a little less in the full-color profile department than some. The big one is an Fw 190A-4, printed on a three-page-wide foldout. There are two-page foldouts of an Fw 190A-5, and Fw 190D-9, and the Ta 152-H1. The rest is line drawings, including nice cutaways of both the final A-series, the A-8, and the ultimate Fw fighter, the Ta 152H-1. A cutaway of the BMW 801 radial engine and the cockpit diagram are nice, though a little simple by modern standards.

Of the other line drawings, the best are the four-views (top and bottom, front and back) of the A-8 in 1/46 scale, and the five-views (top and bottom, front and back, and port side profile, in 1/56 scale) of the D-9 and Ta 152H. These are supplemented by a number of line drawn profiles in 1/42 scale.

In summary, while it has good data, that's nothing you can't find elsewhere -- or even free, on the web, now. This book is about the art, and I think it's well worth the relatively low used price.

Your launching pad into the world of stock options

I was in the middle of writing my own book on retirement investing, which I have now finished. During that process I read many different books to get a well-around education on the subject. One area that always fascinated me - but seemed overwhelming - was the arena of stock options. I read the Futures and Options for Dummies book, only to then become more confused. I kinda gave up on the subject until I stumbled upon Michael Sincere's book in the store.

Don't let the size of the book fool you. The author packs quite a lot of information into these 221 pages. He explains the world of stock options in a very easy-to-understand format. Michael debunks many myths about options and shows you that while some types of options are highly risky, some are not.

This book is the launching pad to get you started in the world of stock options. You will eventually need to read more if you wish to purchase or sell options, but this book becomes your foundation. The nice thing about this book is that you will quickly learn whether or not options are right for you. Personally, I do not want to participate in options. However, I was able to make an informed decision based on the knowledge found in this book. I am still glad I read the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about stock options.

Great style, poor contents

Most people who are familiar with stocks and have never traded options before tend to treat options like stocks. The main strategies exposed by this book are the naked purchasing and selling of options with no spread, which are the very ones that a beginner will try to use (since they seem similar to stock trading) but should not. The only exception, the covered call strategy, has a low risk but also a very low return too and doesn't protect the investor against a major contrary market movement.

One can't deny that the author's intentions seem to be the best possible. He has a friendly manner and tries to motivate the reader all the time. The writing is very pleasant. But, unfortunately, style and intentions are not substitute for a poor treatment of a subject matter.

Armed with the information from this book, the beginner will hopefully find that some key knowledge is missing. For example, the author's explanation on how to adjust a naked call that didn't go well pales in comparison with the outstanding treatment and alternatives presented by McMillan in "Options as a Strategic Investment" on the chapter on the naked purchasing of calls.

For a much better treatment and introduction than this book, try "Get Rich with Options" by Lowell. Its title could be improved, but its contents are just superb. Any comparison with this book under review is simply unfair.

As Einstein once said, "make it simple but not too simple."

For every level investor

I read Sincere's first edition of this book years ago - and never bothered much with options, Certainly not the more advanced strategies. As I readdressed options recently, it became clear that this new edition was mandatory. Things change in the investment world - especially electronic trades - very rapidly.

Sincere's style of writing is clear, concise and very easy to read and follow. Terminology is explained in simple terms - he does a good job of assuring the reader that one will not get boggled in technical terms. As he says ... one doesn't need to understand a combustable engine to drive a car.

Sincere develops the chapters very well, progressing from topic to topic in an understandable and fluid manner.

As he suggests, one must be familiar with stocks, the market, and trading in general, before reading this book. There are many stock market and investment books available as primers, including one by the same author. Read and know investing before you start this book.

Understanding Options is a primer for the beginning option investor, as refresher for the more experienced, and covers very technical and advanced strategies for the seasoned investor.

My first edition - being in book form - is highlighted and dog eared. This edition I bought electronic - easy to read and many links are included which make it nicer to move within the volume to various topics. Of course it can still be 'page marked' and sections saved and highlighted for rereads.

The perfect coloring book for the fashionista!

I'm so bad at drawing but I can color! So this coloring book is perfect for me. Every page is filled with such chic illustrations - it's even great if you want to just outline to drawings to kind of learn how to sketch! I'm 30 and I totally enjoy this coloring book- i bought two so I could also give one to my niece. It's the perfect gift for a child or adult! If you have a daughter or niece, think of this as the perfect "mommy and me" activity! Highly recommend this stylish activity.

Love this coloring book. Love that it's different from a lot of the adult coloring books out there. Love that it's one sided and allows me to color with pencils and markers. I would definitely recommend this coloring books to anyone who colors to relieve stress or just for fun.
