Better than the speakers

The book covers all the fundamentals, and while not as in depth as the Victor Marder tome,...it does help in teaching medical students and residents. Some of the chapters were written by faculty members of the University of Vermont. To tell the truth, the printed word is much more understandable than hearing the speakers in person. In all, a good book for learning the basics.

It provides the essential information that is useful for study. It provides it in a very readable manner for those who are not coagulopathy mavens. Highly recommended.

Great for foundation students

I teach art foundation studies to first and second semester undergraduate students,in Industrial design, Architecture, Digital animation, Communication and publicity and marketing students. i just sort of stmbled on this book, and it has been a great help, other than typical paintings by Bridget Riley or Vassarelly, these Optical patterns have been a great success with my students.

This book is a disappointment, I expected some text re the history of Notan design and some exciting examples. Instead, the book has no text at all, and most of the designs are unoriginal and unexciting. I would return the book for a refund, but it would cost as much to mail it as it cost.

Great not just for Editors - but for Screenwriters, Directors - and even Creative Producers as well

In "Between the Scenes," Jeffrey Michael Bays has distilled the art of what many excellent editors do instinctively. Writers and Directors can learn a great deal from the way an Editor sculpts the raw footage to shifting between beats, scenes and sequences to cinematically express the gestalt of the internalized journey of the characters.

To illuminate this full palette of transitional techniques, he breaks them down into easy-to-understand categories, using examples as diverse as Hitchcock, to that famous viral You Tube Hitler clip :-) to a full case study on Ridley Scott's "Gladiator," to even the differences between cutting for film versus TV - all of which help put these strategic approaches in entertaining context. He further encourages you to synthesize these tools immediately by analyzing the script or project you're currently working on to assess which tools might be best used, where, for the greatest dramatic effect - and why.

As a writer or a director, your project can only benefit from your anticipating the same considerations your Editor will eventually be confronted with: Have you put the story in context and adequately conveyed the underlying mood? Have you left sufficient white space to allow your audience to think and feel? (I loved the concept of the "echo line" - reverberating from one scene and lingering into the next). Have you varied the length, intensity and mood of your scenes to achieve the right overall rhythm? Should you withhold, behold, tease or please? ;-)

Just as actors analyze scripts to determine where their character was before they came into the scene (so they can come on camera "in the moment"), Bays encourages his Readers to consider their characters' movement through geography to express each character's internal journey (without the pace lagging - unless you want it to!).

Writers usually have a very specific reason for why they chose to set a scene in a specific locale, but this book analyzes why a Director might creatively change some of those all critical locations, the time, weather, etc. (other than just budgetary or logistical constraints) - and encourages Writers to preconceive these creative juxtapositions. Most writers and directors are adept at using binary oppositions to achieve contrast but all too many forget (or don't have the patience) to stay that extra beat to capture critical character reactions. This book illustrates why all of these are so critical to multimedia storytelling.

We've all heard that a film is created three times: once when it is written (the whole story world created by the screenwriter), then when it is shot (what the Actors but especially the Director bring to capture the essence of moments in the lens) then finally, when the Editor puzzles together the pieces of the best of what was shot. And (if you're lucky), a great producer can also contribute immeasurably during development). In his "Between the Scenes," Jeffrey Michael Bays gives all three key phase leaders a great deal to consider when plying their craft - be it for film or Televison, on the screen or even still on the script page - as to how to connect their audience with a new character, relieve or build tension - and ultimately: emotionally and intellectually engage their audience.

Gems among pictures

Jeffrey Michael Bays's "Between the Scenes" uncovers so many unsung facets to filmmaking, you wonder why this material hasn't come to light yet. The author is aware of characters, music, objects, symbols, and other layers on how and why films flow. The choices of transition, when to build or reveal character, build tension, or provoke or answer questions. These are all done on various levels with various films. This is pure cinema, and storytelling in this art, which is what we set out to do. Changes from one scene to another keep us watching and make us feel think, and wishing for more.

Author Jeffrey Michael Bays deftly lays out the specifics of scene transitions from analyzing the six major transitions in a storyline to linking multiple plots to creating the cinetmatic ebb that taps into an audience's emotional responses and how music and locations can help to hook and sustain the film or television viewer. Easy to read manual on operative obstetrics as well as some general topics such as preterm labor .Eventhough this book was written by British authors the material is very relevant to how Obstetrics is practiced in the U.S. This book is a nice complement to general Obstetrics books such as Williams Obstetrics and Gabbe's Obstetrics.A pleasure to read.

Hrishikesh D. Vinod is a professor of Economics and director of the Institute for Ethics and Economic Policy at Fordham University, NY. He received his MA from the Delhi School of Economics and Ph. D. in Economics from Harvard University, has worked at Bell Laboratories for many years, and had been an expert witness in major anti-trust trials. He has published over a hundred articles in top journals in Economics-related fields including: Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Management Science, American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review, Journal of Economic Literature, Journal of Business, Journal of Advertising Research, etc. He has edited special issues and refereed for many journals. In 1996, he was named a fellow of the Journal of Econometrics. Maharashtra Foundation honored him for outstanding social service in 1998. Vinod managed a worldwide anti-corruption project before it was fashionable to talk about it. Vinod co-edited volume 11 of the Handbook of Statistics with C. R. Rao, the famous statistician. In August 2005 he organized an international conference on entrepreneurship and human rights at the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University. Vinod has coauthored a Marcel Dekker book on Regression methods and a Wiley monograph on Downside risk in stock market investing. His two recent books: Hands-on Intermediate Econometrics Using R and Hands on Matrix Algebra Using R were published by World Scientific. Vinod has edited a book entitled Advances in Social Science Research using R, which is published by Springer. He had organized an international conference on Hinduism and Economics in 2011 in New York, which was widely covered in the media.

Paulo never dissappoints. I recommend his books (because i'm currently on my 4th) to someone who is spiritual or looking for a different perspective in their lives. It's for the deep thinkers out there! This book inparticular has several short stories so it's easy to just pick up and read in between breaks at work or during your lunch. Enjoy!

With lots of short stories and his personal experiences, Paulo Coelho keeps it interesting while discussing topics otherwise considered important but boring. Its a respite in the abundance of inspirational, motivational and spiritual books out there. It does not have mere speeches or preaching but the practicality of life that reader can easily relate to. A decent book for undergraduates; a reference for others.

The book is a decent read for getting a better understanding on the basics in this subject. The best thing about the book is the qualitative and quanitative arangement and explanation of the material. However, the book may be somewhat confusing if this is your first time dealing with the subject. You should at least have some experience using the diode current equation and some familiarity with how this device works in an actual circuit. I also recommend that become comfortable with using Poisson's equation. Chapter 2 is based entirely on it's use.
The book is ideal for someone wanting to review pn junction physics but not wanting the drawn out detail that you would find in Shur. If you decide to buy this book, buy Volume I, "Semiconductors Fundementals." The authors will make reference to equations in Volume I that won't be found in this one. Yes, they want mo' money!!!

Technical errors fatally flaw this book

This book contains errors. The book attempts to simplify the physics of PN junction diodes, especially by using suggestive sketches in place of mathematical reasoning. As a result it sometimes attracts readers who are learning this material for the first time. Unfortunately the book contains errors which makes its use in this fashion unacceptable. It teaches students untruths which if repeated in an exam would be marked incorrect.
For example in the derivation of the ideal diode equation, the author claims that both drift and diffusion currents flow from one side of the junction to the other, which when no bias is applied balance for both electrons and holes. In fact no drift currents flow across an ideal PN junction, since no carriers exist where there is an electric field. It is true that within the depletion layer, large diffusion and drift currents flow, which balance in thermal equilibrium so that the Fermi level is flat through the junction. However under bias, quite separate currents flow from one side of the junction to the other, which have nothing to do with drift. For a full explanation refer to the book by Muller & Kamins, "Device Electronics for Integrated Circuits" (2nd ed.), Wiley, 1986, ISBN 0471887587.
Such fundamental errors are inexcusable in a book purporting to teach fundamentals.

This book offers the clearest explanation of the physics of a diode that I've seen, i.e., what exactly those holes and electrons are doing! It isn't simple; that's the nature of the physics, but it is clearly explained and in the text and the drawings.
