Just...OK

So, what's a poor, beleaguered Laird to do when he's out of money? He marries an heiress! Niall is the ruler of his clan, and desperately needs the infusion that Katherine's fortune will funnel his way to rebuild his clan. Katherine has lived a life of abuse at the hands of a cruel uncle, and pretty willingly starts a new life with her taciturn husband. If you're thinking this is a bit of an overused historical romance plotline, well, good thinking.

There's really nothing new in the story or the characters. Katherine's innate sweetness and selflessness makes the clan align with and accept her; Niall is a bit surly and overbearing, all due to a romantic betrayal in his past that's never fully fleshed out. He's quite mean to Katherine in several exchanges and she just takes it. Niall also accuses his brother of being a traitor at every conceivable turn, and winds up being not very likeable.

However, I did keep reading! I don't know if I'm simply hungry for another good Highlander romance or what, but I was entertained enough to finish the story. I also respect the level of editing of the book; excessive errors and grammatical issues tend to throw me right out of a decent tale. Because of that, I will definitely try another of the author's works. It wasn't the best of the genre (For me, Julie Garwood and the recent Maya Banks Highlander novels were better), but it certainly wasn't the worst!

I didn't put this down until I finished it!!

Have you ever made dinner with one hand while reading a book because you couldn't put it down? That was me last night. Draining the pasta was a bit of a challenge.

Niall MacIan doesn't trust women. However, he needs a wife with tons of money to save his clan. King David takes care of that by granting him Katherine Ruthven, a lowland heiress whose Uncle abuses.

Katherine is loved by her entire clan and she protects them anyway she can even if that means taking the blows herself.

I'm so glad that Niall found Katherine. They needed each other so much. Niall so he could learn to trust others and himself. Katherine so she would understand that with opening your heart to love, you will sometimes feel the worst hurt. But working through that hurt together leads to a love that can handle anything.

The cast of characters including Niall's brother Fingal and his elite guard are endearing. They sided with Katherine more than once against Niall. Niall and Fingal's mother is awful and causes so much havoc for Katherine. Katherine brings a young boy with her after her marriage to Niall. Tomas becomes their foster son and learns that someone wants to kill Niall.

I loved this story and really hope that this author continues with some of the other characters in this book.

Pretty good start for series

I must say that I really did enjoy this book even though really nothing new in story's plot. I don't like to write bad reviews, I think you can list what you don't like about a book without dissing the author. I'm not an author but have read numerous articles by my favorites in which they talk about how much of themselves goes into their books. That being said, the book is well written and holds you're interest just not enough steam in the romance for my liking. It's well worth the price so if you don't mind "tamer" love scenes go for it, you won't be disappointed!

In The Religious Art Of Andy Warhol, art historian and curator Jane Dillenberger explores the sources and manifestations of the controversial pop-artist's spiritual side as revealed through his work. Especially his Skill paintings, the Warhol prints based on Renaissance religious artwork, his Cross paintings, and the large Warhol series based on "The Last Supper". Warhol grew up on a Slovakian ghetto of Pittsburgh and experienced the elaborate and colorful rituals of the Byzantine Catholic Church. These influences also included his devout mother with whom he lived some forty of his fifty-eight years. The Religious Art Of Andy Warhol is a "must" for all Warhol fans, as well as students of 20th century American art.

a review of the last decade of warhol reveals that he was a fanatical orthodox Catholic and religion was one of his greatest loves including serving the poor food. Warhol seriously painted a lot of religious images and this book details them and shows them including his greatest work LAST SUPPER. If you love Andy, you must have this book

About the Author
Richard Abcarian (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-seven years. During his teaching career, he won two Fulbright professorships. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and its compact edition, he is the editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks.

Marvin Klotz (PhD, New York University) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-three years and won Northridge's distinguished teaching award in 1983. He is also the winner of two Fulbright professorships (in Vietnam and Iran) and was a National Endowment for the Arts Summer Fellow twice. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and several other textbooks, he coauthored a guide and index to the characters in Faulkner's fiction.

Samuel Cohen (PhD, City University of New York) is Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri. He is the author of After the End of History: American Fiction in the 1990s, co-editor (with Lee Konstantinou) of The Legacy of David Foster Wallace, Series Editor of The New American Canon: The Iowa Series in Contemporary Literature and Culture, and has published in such journals as Novel, Clio, Twentieth-Century Literature, The Journal of Basic Writing, and Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is author of 50 Essays: A Portable Anthology and coauthor of Literature: The Human Experience.

About the Author

Samuel T. Gladding is a Professor of Counseling and chair of the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Gladding is also the former editor of Journal for Specialists in Group Work and the author of over 100 professional publications. He has been a practicing counsellor in both public and private agencies since 1971. His leadership in the field of counselling includes service as president of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Specialists in Group Work (AGW), and Chi Sigma Iota (counseling academic and professional honor society international). Gladding is also the former editor of Journal for Specialists in Group Work and the author of over 100 professional publications. He is a national Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCHC), and a practicing Licensed Professional Counselor (North Carolina). Gladding is a Fellow in the American Counseling Association and a recipient of the Gilbert and Kathleen Wrenn for a Humanitarian and Caring Person.

Kevin G. Alderson is an Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology at the University of Calgary. Dr. Alderson has been a counsellor for more than 30 years and a licensed practicing psychologist for 25. His experiences have included working as a child and youth care worker, a caseworker, a mental health worker, and a psychologist in diverse settings. Before joining the university in July 2001, Dr. Alderson was Head of Counselling and Health Services at Mount Royal College (now a university) in Calgary for several years. Alderson is the current Editor of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy and the author of five previous books.

Superior Author; Sloppy Proofreader

Griff Hosker is a gifted author. In the first five books of this eight part epic, I was constantly stealing time from my other activities so that I could return to reading. One morning, I found that I had read all night: eight hours straight. Then, in book six, I started being distracted by proofreading errors. I am now two thirds through this book: Viking Sword. The story is just as interesting, but there are more and more glaring errors. Frankly, the errors are driving me crazy.

Four sentences after telling the reader that there were ten Danes, we are told that all twelve Danes attacked. Later, the hero reports that he is cheered by the people, "...as I rode through their homes." I could go on pointing-out problems in wording, punctuation, and inconsistencies that mar this book, but that is not my review's purpose.

My review's purpose is to say, "Please, Mr. Hosker, go back to using the proofreader that you employed when you published this series' first five books!"

This book is so excellent and well researched that I decided to read the whole series of 7 books.

To read such well researched historical stories helps you to see in the future, as history always repeats itself. The Berserks to day who have the latest military hardware, say that they love dying, as much as ordinary people like living. Migration is also a trouble of our contemporary times.

the dragonheart series is excellent as is the wolf brethren series. Mr. Hosker is a great storyteller with strong characterizations of persons that can be admired for their determination, bravery, and honor- refreshing! There are many battle scenes that are graphic in their violence but since these novels take place during one of the most turbulent and violent periods in British history it's appropriate. These series are well written and of the kind that you don't want to stop reading til you have finished.
