Mass and Elite in Democratic Athens: Rhetoric, Ideology, and the Power of the People, by Josiah Ober

This book asks an important question often ignored by ancient historians and political scientists alike: Why did Athenian democracy work as well and for as long as it did? Josiah Ober seeks the answer by analyzing the sociology of Athenian politics and the nature of communication between elite and nonelite citizens. After a preliminary survey of the development of the Athenian "constitution," he focuses on the role of political and legal rhetoric. As jurymen and Assemblymen, the citizen masses of Athens retained important powers, and elite Athenian politicians and litigants needed to address these large bodies of ordinary citizens in terms understandable and acceptable to the audience. This book probes the social strategies behind the rhetorical tactics employed by elite speakers.

A close reading of the speeches exposes both egalitarian and elitist elements in Athenian popular ideology. Ober demonstrates that the vocabulary of public speech constituted a democratic discourse that allowed the Athenians to resolve contradictions between the ideal of political equality and the reality of social inequality. His radical reevaluation of leadership and political power in classical Athens restores key elements of the social and ideological context of the first western democracy.

From the Back Cover
First, the book is meant to be a contribution to Greek history: an attempt to explain the social roots and internal functioning of the political system of an ancient city-state. I hope that many of those who consider the history and culture of fifth-and fourth-century Athens intrinsically interesting, as I do, will find this study valuable in formulating or reformulating their own assessments of classical Greece.

Not to be Missed
By S. Ross
Josiah Ober's book is no longer new, but it is still as fresh as when it first came out, in the 1980's. It should be required reading for anyone interested in the way Athenian democracy worked, or how any democracy can work, for that matter. Ober focuses, not on the notorious periods of civic strife and oligarchic revolution, but on the working democracy, especially during the period of the great orators (4th century B.C.). The question, he implies, is not "why did the democracy break down," but "why did it work as well, and as long, as it did?" Ober finds the answer in "ideology," which for him is the symbolic language--of word, posture, gesture, and deed--that allowed the upper class ("elite") political leaders to communicate with an audience composed mostly of lower class citizens who might not be expected to be very sympathetic to them. My only quibble is that Ober may assume too lightly that things worked the same way in the 5th century (the "Age of Pericles"); but he does address himself to this question, and uses what little evidence there is to elucidate it (e.g. the various speeches preserved in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War; the plays of Aristophanes, etc.). Ober also does his best to draw parallels and conclusions that are relevant to modern political systems, especially "democracy" as it is practiced in the U.S. It's compelling reading--but before taking it on, you might want to bone up on your Greek history a little bit. Make sure you know who Demosthenes was, and his role in trying to help Athens figure out how to respond to the rising power of Philip of Macedon and Alexander the Great!

Rethinking Athenian Democracy- rethinking our own.
By greg taylor
This is that rare scholarly work that successfully challenges a traditional body of learning. With this book, Ober unified a scholarly movement that had been somewhat inchoate and gave it an organized structure. It is not so much that everyone who works on the history of the Athenian democracy will agree with Ober but the way they discuss the issues, the way they frame the arguments will be structured by Ober's work.

As the previous reviewer stated, Ober believes that for several hundred years that the Athenian democracy was a successful and workable government. He believes that the citizens of Athens were able to transform the ideology of honor that had defined the elite in such a way that the citizens and the elites were able to mostly work together to govern their city. That ideology evolved and was refined such that the elites were still encouraged to compete against each other but in ways which made the mass of citizens the judges. The citizens were the ones who awarded the prizes and who gave the honors.

Being put into that position, the elite had to modify their attitudes toward the mass of citizens. The way that Ober argues that this occurred is altogether brilliant. He discusses how this occurred both in the courts and in the governing councils. He discusses how the elites learned to display and use their superior education, wealth and status to the advantage of the state and the masses. He discuss how the mass ideology encouraged the elites to channel their display and their rhetoric of superiority into acceptable form.

I cannot state what a revelation this book was to me. I have read many of the ancient historians and am well read in most of the ancient philosophical schools. In the follow up to this book, Political Dissent in Democratic Athens, Ober goes on to argue that most of those philosophers and historians created a counter-ideology that confronted and tested the ideology of the masses. Historically, the counter-ideology is the one that won (if only by the accident of the survival of texts- never forget how little of the ancient literature we have or how lucky we are to have what we do).

Ober's thesis is that if you go back and look at the records, the speeches, the actions and the results that that counter-ideology needs to be balanced against the fact that the radical Athenian democracy was successful and creatively responded to the needs of the city both domestically and in their foreign policy.

I will put it more bluntly than I think Professor Ober would- At the origins of the Western tradition of political philosophy is a lie. The radical democracy of Athens is full of lessons for us in our present situation. I will also state
that anyone who is knowledgeable in the ratification debates of our own Constitution will learn that much of the American political tradition had its origins in Athenian democracy.

Ugh. Ober.
By kokoagogo19
Josiah Ober is kind of a tool, who refuses to acknowledge the military having a role in ancient Greece, which is super ridiculous. Especially considering that the hoplite culture is what basically formed the polis culture. He isn't a very gifted writer either. But the book is informative.

The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder, by Daniel Stashower

On July 28, 1841, the body of Mary Rogers, a twenty-year-old cigar girl, was found floating in the Hudson-and New York's unregulated police force proved incapable of solving the crime. One year later, a struggling writer named Edgar Allan Poe decided to take on the case-and sent his fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, to solve the baffling murder of Mary Rogers in "The Mystery of Marie Rogt."

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Edgar winner Teller of Tales now recounts the story of Manhattan tobacco store clerk Mary Rogers, a mysterious beauty whose posse of admirers made her a minor celebrity in 1841 in various newspapers' society pages. The discovery that year of her mutilated corpse fueled a public outcry and a newspaper circulation war, as well as a fictional magazine serial by Edgar Allan Poe featuring his famous detective Dupin speculating on the murder of working-class Parisian "Marie Rogt." Poe rightly deduced that Mary wasn't a victim of the gang violence that plagued New York City in the absence of an effective police presence. But he came late to the accepted theory that Mary had died of a botched abortion and had to tweak his final installment to maintain his and Dupin's reputations. Although Stashower's account bogs down in comparisons of Poe's revisions of the Rogt manuscript, it's a generally absorbing account of the birth of the modern detective story. The sordid details of Mary Rogers's stunted life pale in comparison with Poe's own love-starved childhood, self-destructive tidal wave of alcoholism, poverty and rants against publishers and rivals; Poe's genius and literary legacy are hauntingly drawn here. From Booklist
Mystery novelist Stashower, who won a nonfiction Edgar for Teller of Tales (1999), a biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, returns to his historical roots in this examination of a celebrated murder in 1840s New York City that turned Edgar Allan Poe into an amateur sleuth. The text ably weaves the story of a young woman, celebrated for her beauty and her untimely death, with that of Poe, whose poems and stories often celebrated the deaths of young, beautiful women. Mary Rogers worked behind the counter of a cigar store in Manhattan in 1841; she was so beautiful that the store was jammed with her admirers. On July 28, 1831, three days after Rogers had gone missing, her body was found floating in the Hudson. The press seized on her murder, but the New York police force (depicted by Stashower as completely disorganized) failed to find her killer. One year later, Poe (just after the success of his detective Dupin in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue") proposed to his publisher that he investigate this famous cold case. Although Stashower works a bit hard to invest this murder with multiple levels of significance, it remains an intriguing story, one that sheds considerable light on the snares of a big city for a young woman. Expect this book to attract readers who were entranced by The Devil in the White City (2003), another account of crime in the nineteenth century. Connie Fletcher

"Nevermore"
By Frank J. Konopka
Although this book holds itself out to be a review of the grisly murder of Mary Rogers in 1841 New York, it appears to, instead, turn into a biography of Edgar Allan Poe. That's not to say that this is a bad thing, but perhaps the title should have reflected that more than it does. The book is well written, with emphasis on what the newspapers of the time reported. That there is no solution to the murder mystery does dampen the enthusiasm of the reader somewhat, but that's what often happens when dealing with true crimes. I found the atmosphere presented very tangible, and I did enjoy the Poe biography (I've been to his grave in Baltimore), so the book held my interest. Perhaps others, not as interested in Poe as I am, will not find the book as enjoyable to read.

It is the story of a real crime committed in July 1841 in or about New York City that transfixed the media of the day, challenged Edgar Allan Poe to put his detective fiction theories to the test and transformed New York before eventually fading away in the public consciousness a few decades later.

If there is something to be learned by the ubiquitous episodes of the "Law and Order" and "CSI" franchises, it is that a murder is never straightforward. Just like those shows, when the lovely, alluring yet innocent seeming Manhattan store clerk who worked in a popular smoke shop frequented by men of all walks of life goes missing and her body is later found washing up near a waterfront park in Hoboken, New Jersey, Pandora's box is opened. Circumstantial evidence suggests connections to the city's gang culture and abortionists. There is a revolving door of individual suspects, too, who may or may not have been the victim's swains. The police department is largely night watchmen and process servers prone to corruption and unequal to the task of fighting and detecting crime. Then the media steps in and it is hyped beyond belief. In Philadelphia, where he has taken umbrage after burning just about every personal and professional bridge in New York, Poe reads the newspaper accounts and realizes that his ever-present money problems and professional ambitions could be resolved by inserting the fictive detecting methods he created for "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." He puts himself on the line, advertising that in his new story starring his detective Dupin, "The Mystery of Marie Roget," he will solve the puzzle.

To say more is to spoil this very real plot. I think Stashower does a fine job of balancing and interweaving the various strands of biography, social history, crime detection and the birth of detective fiction. He has a very direct but graceful way of writing and ordering his information. He evokes 19th century New York vividly. If you liked THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY, then you should enjoy this. My only complaint, too small to demote the book a star, is that I wish the author were more explicit as to naming his sources when he quotes, for instance, "a writer of the day." There is a considerable bibliography at the end, but no idea which source gave up what information per se.

Beautiful Cigar Girl is!
By Annie
Daniel Stashower's newst book is a compendium of exacting scholarship; tight writing and razor sharp historical sleuthing that we have come to know from this modern master of the historical biography. The Beautiful Cigar Girl traces the murder of a popular commoner of the 19th century whose death captivated the press, ushering in a new era of sensationalism. Stashower does not duck the responsibility of going toe to toe with the hard facts and the murky details of the time and places. He edges into this story with the undeniably fascinating character of no less than Edgar Allan Poe and his interest in this most unusual story. While there have been at least 4 or 5 texts to deal with this murder, these figures and E. A. Poe's involvement, none holds a candle to this opus by the Edgar Award winning Stashower. His award is safe and worthy of the man it is named after, and how appropriate that EAP should sit on his shelf overlooking this story that never ends...for this volume makes us reconsider our modern press and every "murder of the century" from the story at hand right up to the Amish massacre recently. One word describes this massive amount of work, scholarship and raw talent: Bravo!

Dark Bishop, by Rachael Brownell, Casey Bond

A dangerous game has begun.
Sydney. Her skin felt as soft as it looked. I shouldn’t have touched her, but I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been to New Orleans dozens upon dozens of times. It’s a unique city, filled with tourists and superstition. And until tonight, I’d never been superstitious.
An old fortuneteller freak stopped me on the way to the diner and said I would make a decision that would change my path. She didn’t know that I’d walked the path to this very restaurant before. It had been a few years.
Who knew that the decision to return would be blessed with a beauty—five foot six with curves in all the right mouth-watering places. Clothed in cheap polyester, stained with God only knew what, Sydney was a vision. Blonde hair to her waist. Big brown doe eyes. I could almost taste her.
In his game, everyone’s a pawn…
I didn’t miss the rumble of her stomach when I asked her to dine with us. She was hungry. Something that flashed in those eyes told me it wasn’t because she just skipped lunch today. Maybe I could meet some of her needs. Forget that. I could definitely meet her needs, but it was up to her to let me. So, I left her my business card, my number.
Girls like Sydney, they’re afraid. They never make the first move. Most never even make the second. I doubt she’d call. I’d tipped her well, not because she was the best waitress I’d ever had, not even because she was within my sites. I tipped her so that when I came back to the diner, she would remember me. She would want to serve me.
And, oh, would she ever serve me. I just have to play my cards right.
…and he’s never lost a game.

Get all of Mr. Bishop in one sizzing hot book!
By S. Lewis (TMLA)
Ummm.....WOW!!! I was lucky enough to get the whole series before it went live at a signing from the wonder Casey Bond, and I jumping in as soon as I got home. There is only so much I can say without giving anything way so I'm going to do my best here to keep this very short and sweet or should I say dark. Jake Bishop is a character in his own category. I'm not even sure how to describe him. He is hot and needs control in all things for his own reasons. This book is full of twist and turns and I never knew what was coming next. The ending had me completely speechless and reeling. To say this is one crazy ride is an under statement. It is a true mind-screw to say the least. Rachael and Casey's writing style and characters compliment each other amazingly and I hope to read more by the both of them in the near future. This is unlike anything I have ever read and I GREATLY enjoyed it!

Dark and twisted, a great and quick read
By Katy W
It is going to be easier for me to review parts 1-5 together I think.

I loved this serial series. This was my first serial series that I had the pleasure to read the entire thing in one sitting. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Jake Bishop is a dark, tall, and handsome lawyer with a dark "American Psycho" streak running through him like bloody river. I both love him and hate him, which is what I'm sure the authors wanted me to feel. If you enjoy suspense, romance, lies, betrayal, and other topics on that vein, please pick this serial series up today. Quick read, very entertaining!

WHAT A BOOK!
By Lorna Chaney
What a book! The twist in part 5 of this story is totally shocking! I have never in all my life (& I am 74), read a book like "Dark Bishop." It is a romance: starring Jake B. and Sydney C.; a thriller and total suspence starring Jake B. Also, it is told from more than one person's point of view. You really must read this book. It's a 5 star read. Jake walks into Syd's life and ... a very complicated relationship begins. I am not going to say anymore or I will give away some storylines. Definately a 5 Star book!
Thanks Casey and Rachael.

Flexibility is as acceptable an objective for today's industrial community as is automation. Thus, the title of this conference proceedings volume - Flexible Automation - reflects an added emphasis to the usual industrial automation. As with general automation that has impacted every component of the manufacturing office and plant, the identity of flexible automation can possess various forms and functions. The papers in this volume have been grouped into two main categories. One category deals with implementation of so-called "intelligent manufacturing". This means use of algorithmic methods and artificial intelligence approaches to various problems encountered in practical factory automation tasks. The placement of papers into five chapters of this part cannot be very precise, due to multidisciplinary nature and constant rapid change of the field. The categories are arranged starting from problems of enhancement of current factory settings, and followed by the papers addressing more specific issues of production planning, process technology and product engineering. The fifth chapter contains papers on the very important aspects of factory automation - problems of design, simulation, operation and monitoring of manufacturing cells.

The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith, by Irshad Manji

Winner of Oprah's first "Chutzpah Award" for boldness, Irshad Manji is among the world's most visible - and vocal - Muslim reformers. In this audiobook, narrated by her, Irshad explains the disturbing attitudes with which too many of her fellow Muslims practice Islam today: Arab cultural tribalism posing as pure faith. An uncritical approach to the Quran as the final and therefore superior word of God. And a rejection of universal human rights as if they are incompatible with the Divine.

As a faithful Muslim, Irshad shows that Islam has the raw material to rectify these injustices. Irshad offers a practical vision of how reform-minded Muslim can empower women, promote respect for religious minorities and foster a competition of ideas. This vision builds on "ijtihad" (ij-tee-had), Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. Irshad Manji's message for Muslims and non-Muslims? Dare to ask questions - out loud. In this audiobook, her voice rings clearly, compassionately, and passionately. You will love the musical surprises, too!

Is There a Campaign Against This Book?
By Bill Marsano
By Bill Marsano. Is there a campaign against Irshad Manji's book? Certainly it seems something odd is afoot. Impartial readers should examine the reviews posted (52 as of April 10) and decide for themselves. I have; here are my conclusions:
Thirty reviews are positive--3 to five stars--and 14 (nearly 50%) are by people who have reviewed for Amazon before. Only 7 (less than 25%) are anonymous, signed "A Reader"). In general, the reviewers discuss the merits of the .
Twenty-two reviews are hostile--almost all only 1 star--and only 5 (about 23%) are by previous Amazon reviewers. (One claims a children's game caused repeated vomiting by her child; reviews a $2.79 screwdriver; and attacks a book she admits not having read. In short, she doesn't review--she rants.) Nine (about 40%) are anonymous. Many are merely ad hominem attacks on the author, who is described as dishonest, ignorant, money-hungry, publicity-seeking (even fatwa-seeking) and fostering a "craze for Islamophobia." One calls Manji "simply not a Muslim" because of her "inability to read Arabic, absence from active Mulim worship, embrace of the West and its secular values, not to mention her identity as a Lesbian feminist."
I believe Amazon's reader-reviews are important and should not be distorted by partisan attacks. Readers should be alert to possible unfairness in this case. Now (at last) to the book itself.
Manji addresses her fellow Muslims thus: "I have to be honest with you. Islam is on pretty thin ice with me. I'm hanging on by my fingernails . . . ." What sounds like a nifty, snappy, wise-ass opener is, it soon becomes clear, really an expression of pain. Spirituality is important to Manji, and she feels her religion has betrayed her--from childhood onward--and she makes a number of important points.
First, she rejects the notion, popular since 9/11, that the problem isn't Islam but that Islam has been 'highjacked' by murderous psychopaths. No, she says: Mainstream Islam IS the culprit; it is cruel and even brutal toward women, toward Jews, toward Christians, toward all other infidels--even toward other Muslims. Dissident Muslims can be and have been beaten, imprisoned, killed. Muslims who aren't religious enough (e.g., those impious, kite-flying Afghanis) have been crushed. (Indeed, they were the Taliban's first victims: There's nothing fundamentalists hate more than apostates.)
As for the simplistic idea that "you mustn't confuse Islam with culture," she's all too well aware that Islam and such cultural horrors as Sharia law go hand in hand, each supporting the other. Sharia law, you may recall, means honor killings, punishing homosexuals by toppling walls on them, punishing adulteresses by stoning them to death, and defining rape victims as adulteresses.
She is clear on Islam's hermetic nature: Ask a question and get no answer, especially if you're a woman. Propose interpretation and be told the Koran is the literal word of God--and that the 'hadiths' or secondary sources are likewise not to be questioned, analyzed, interpreted. The source of this closed view is, she says, "desert Islam"--the narrow, harsh Wahabist Islam of Saudi Arabia. Its hermeticism is only increasing. The Koran, according to fundamentalists, can't be translated but must be read in Arabic (some also believe that only Arabs are "real Muslims"), and the Wahabist madressas (religious schools) don't want many people to read it even in Arabic. They don't teach reading but foster illiteracy; their students must learn to recite Koranic verses by rote.
Very interesting: What you can't read, you can't question or analyze or parse. You can't even know there are contradictory Koranic passages of compassion and tolerance toward non-believers and other beliefs. Can they be literally God's words? "The Koran is so profoundly at war with itself," says Manji, "that Muslims who 'live by the book' have no choice but to choose what to emphasize and what to downplay." Unless, of course, they're madressa-trained illiterates who will never know the contradictions exist. Imagine that: a religion with a vested interest in illiteracy. Is that a recipe for backwardness, or what?
Manji says most "moderate Mulims" allow these and other abuses to continue without protest. They remain silent--silent except, Manji says, for "screaming self-pity." Indeed, Muslims are frequently quoted in the New York Times on being maginalized, discriminated against and harmed by "backlash" and Islamophobia. Really? Such reports conspicuously lack anything but accusations and charges; there are never any facts. If Muslims in America in particular and the West in general were being victimized, do you not think you'd have heard about it by now? Manji's view and mine is that Western Muslims either support the abuses of desert Islam--or they are crippled by fear of retirbution.
In 217 pages Manji cannot be a scholar nor a historian. She goes a little too easily on the West and Isrtael at times. But she is successful at raising important questions, contradictions and challenges. She is not the best of writers--her tone is urgent, insistent and unmoldulated (to the point of being tedious at times). But her flaws are few and her courage cannot be questioned.--Bill Marsano is a professional writer and editor.

Thoughtful view from an insider
By A Customer
[...] A liberal woman raised in a strict Islamic family, Manji offers readers an interesting insiders view of Islamic life. Questions regarding the narrowness of her experience may be legitimate, but they still offer a telling look at the trouble modern Muslims face trying to integrate their faith into their modern life style.
Many can question how Islam reached its current position, but despite its position as one of the world's fastest growing religion, Manji is correct that it faces a crisis. The largest funders of Islamic proselytizing and scholarship -- Persian gulf petrol dollars -- also represent the faiths most conservative elements. Not surprisingly, they often conflate ancient Arabian social custom with articles of Islamic faith causing substantial regression towards misogynist and anti-democratic principles. Here she offers ample evidence such as books donated by Saudi Arabian charities to Islamic primary schools, which contain blanket vitriolic attacks on America, the West, and Jews.
This analysis dovetails well with the question she raises about what effect the large number of repressive authoritarian governments in Islamic countries has on the faith. Here argument that changes in Islam will have to come from Western Muslims is interesting, though she does not do enough to ask how they can gain sufficient legitimacy to bring about such change.

Manji's most frightening observations and probably the most often attacked are her observations regarding the current Middle East crisis. In current charged times these are hot button issues, but her analysis adds a much needed element to the current debate. One need only look at the lionization in the Islamic world of suicide bombers who murder civilians to understand that this faith faces a grave threat of descending into nihilism. This death cult, hardly limited to the West Bank and Gaza posses grave risk for all Islam.
Manji's thesis, that Islam must embrace some sort of reformation as other faiths have, should not be dismissed out of hand. Many may find her analysis disturbing and particular diagnosis flawed, but its hard to deny the existence of a problem.

A Must-Read
By D. Mikels
Organized religion has a tendency to invite disaster due to the inherent flaws of the human condition that predicate judgment, mistrust, hatred, and disdain for those who adhere to a faith and dogma different from our own. In particular, the monotheistic Semitic religions over the course of history have proven to be the most rigid and intolerant of other faiths; this 'my way or the highway' approach has resulted in warfare, conquests, and carnage that--unfortunately--carries through to today.

In the post-9/11 world, Islam has occupied center stage of our global lexicon. In the name of this religion, international networks of terrorism have been spawned to attack, kill, and terrify. And Islam, like any other faith, has its problems--the totalitarian intolerance of dissent being one of its ugliest thorns. Under such a foreboding environment, Canadian TV journalist Irshad Manji dares to speak out via an open letter to all Muslims in her compelling and riveting book, THE TROUBLE WITH ISLAM.

Granted, the author openly admits she is grappling with her faith; one day, she laments, she may leave Islam for good. Yet Manji has the courage and fortitude to shed light on the myriad of problems inflicting her faith: the oppression of women in the Arab and Muslim world; the unwavering intolerance of other religions in Arab and Muslim nations; the rampant anti-Semitism festering and infecting mosques around the world. The author presents a convincing case that Islam has been captured by zealots who espouse a malignant, narrow interpretation of the Koran: an interpretation that portrays Islam as an antiquated relic looking backward--instead of a peaceful vehicle for adaptation and change in an ever-changing world. This rigid adherence to the past, according to Manji, is defined as 'foundamentalism,' or 'desert Islam.' And the author calls for the 'silent majority' of moderate Muslims to come together to reject such fundamentalism, beginning with Muslims in the West--Muslims who have the freedom to speak their minds.

THE TROUBLE WITH ISLAM is a remarkable, engrossing page-turner. Manji presents her arguments, evidence, and observations in a delightfully conversational--often witty--style. Based on the dozens and dozens of one-star reviews of this book, the author and other Muslims calling for sweeping reform have their work cut out for them; on the other hand, each critique represents the opportunity for dialogue--dialogue inherently welcomes discussion. And a frank, open, and honest discussion of Islam is absolutely in order.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2015: Karin Slaughter's new stand-alone novel grabs you from the start and doesn't let go - even after you turn the final page. While taking a break from her popular Will Trent and Sara Linton series, but staying true to form, Slaughter presents readers with a new set of complex characters masterfully woven together in Pretty Girls, a psychological thriller about a family torn apart by (almost) unspeakable tragedy. From the mind-blowing character of Paul, to the sweet and sensitive perspective of Julia's father, Slaughter leaves nothing left to be desired. There were more than a few times while reading Pretty Girls where I stopped myself, mid-page, taken aback - not just from the dark and twisted storyline unfolding before me, but also by the realization of how much I was loving every word. This book is certainly disturbing at times, shocking at others, and scary enough to have you checking over your shoulder while you read late into the night, unable to put it down. -- Penny Mann

Unbelievable plot; graphic sexual sadism
By sb-lynn
This story starts off with a letter written by a grief-stricken father to his missing teenage daughter. She had disappeared years earlier under very suspicious circumstances but the police were in doubt whether or not she had been just a runaway.

We soon find out that the missing girl was named Julia and she had two sisters. After Julia disappeared, her family seemed to fall apart. The older sister Lydia had gone on to a life filled with drugs and alcohol and she became alienated from the younger sister named Claire, who went on to marry a successful yet odd man she had known from school. The parents had divorced and the mother remarried. The father had dedicated his life to search for the missing Julia.

As the story goes on, Claire and Lydia reunite and go on to try to solve the mystery of their sister Julia's disappearance. In order to do this, they must throw out all their preconceived ideas about their past and about the people who are supposed to be on their side, helping them.

I read a book by this author several years ago and thought she showed some good writing chops, even though for my taste it had too much graphic violence. For some reason I thought this book was going to be a little different but instead the pornography and explicit violence were just off the charts. I am not a prude when it comes to reading about this sort of thing and I have read and enjoyed many books about serial killers and their ilk - but this one felt so gratuitous and been-done-before.

Putting aside my discomfort with that aspect, what did I think about the story? I never bought into it at all. I've been in the criminal justice field for all of my professional life and this story was just...ridiculous - full of coincidences, nonsensical cabals, plot contrivances and people who are supposed to have brains acting like they don't have any.

The women in this book often act feisty and and talk sassy even when it's in their self-interest to behave otherwise. Their actions seemed so self-destructive and foolishly impulsive and the author really had to stretch the logic to make them do what they did, without their seeking proper help. The main villain? I get it, he was a true sexual psychopath - but he and the whole situation with him and others never felt realistic.

What I can say in the book's behalf is that this is an author who knows how to hold a reader's interests. Aside from the difficulty I had with the believability of the plot, the author has a way with words and dialogue that feel natural and easy. I would love to read something by her that toned down the violence and didn't have the plot holes and flaws that this one does.

Worse than that
By Frank Sadowski
This will be a short review. I simply cannot believe that at the time of this review's writing, 56% of the reviewers gave it five stars. I find this to be one of the most gratuitously violent, sadistic, and misogynistic books I have ever had the misfortune to read. I have read all of Ms. Slaughter's books, and although they have been uniformly violent, this one is over the top in so many ways. Worse than that, it is a totally unrealistic and unbelievable plot, with characters whose personalities shift to fit the action. Lastly, the degradation of women as a theme is repulsive.

I did not enjoy this book simply because I am tired of writers ...
By Sarah Garner
I did not enjoy this book simply because I am tired of writers trying to come up with the most disgusting, disturbing way to rape and kill a woman. I chose this book off of the review from Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl. I did not not enjoy this book one bit.

From Publishers Weekly
In this newest addition to the Unsung Americans series, Yates draws on a variety of sources to examine the life of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), perhaps best known today for writing "This Land Is Your Land" and for inspiring a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. While much of the book is devoted to Guthrie's role as a champion of the oppressed and underprivileged, the picture that ultimately emerges is of a troubled and immature dreamer who, in his quest for self-fulfillment, avoided his responsibilities to his family (three wives left him) and his employers. Emphasizing her subject's sensitivity to the political and social issues of his times, Yates discusses the changing climate of the country, explaining how these changes are reflected in Guthrie's music. Especially useful are her overviews of the growth of labor movements and the backlash against Communist organizers, the creation of social programs to counteract the Depression, and the effects of WWII on American society. From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up?American history is vividly and candidly portrayed in this biography of one of our country's foremost balladeers. Woody Guthrie's story is at once a tale of personal tragedy, survival, and the turmoil created by poverty and natural disaster. Much of his life was played out against the devastating effect of his sister's death when he was six, poverty bred of the dust storms of 1935, and the Great Depression. The hardships faced as his family left Oklahoma for California where they became migrant farm workers is reminiscent of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. These experiences shaped Guthrie's social conscience and political outlook. Throughout his life, music was a constant, however, and the songwriter used the sounds around him and his concerns for the downtrodden as inspiration. In addition to being a wonderful historical account of American folk music and the times in which the subject lived, this book is also an absorbing read. A crisp style brings to life Guthrie's constant struggle against poverty and social injustice and his final fight against Huntington's chorea, a genetically linked disease. A few archival photographs are included. A fine addition.?Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 6-10. From the age of six, when his older sister burned to death, Woody Guthrie experienced hardship. His mother's battle with Huntington's chorea, from which Woody also died, tore his family apart. When his father was seriously burned, and both parents were hospitalized, Woody was on his own at age 15. His fascination with the songs and stories of the migrant workers he often encountered helped his innate musical and writing gifts blossom. In spite of a personal life marked by marital strife, personal instability, and the tragic death of his four-year-old daughter (ironically, by fire), he wrote more than 1,000 songs and, like his close friend Huddie Ledbetter (better known as "Leadbelly"), popularized and preserved the traditional music of his forebears. Yates describes Woody's creative life and provides important historical information, including a harrowing description of the great dust storm of 1935 and its aftermath. Woody's friendly relationships with labor union organizers and members of the Communist Party, as well as his relationships with other musicians--Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan among them--add significant interest to this well-written biography. End notes, bibliography (including audio recordings), chronology. Merri Monks
